Favola in musica in un prologo e cinque atti-Monteverdi’s opera “L’Orfeo” based on the legend of Thracian singer Orpheus and his love of Eurydice is a masterpiece of musical declamation and ornamentation. It was first performed during the 1607 carnevale in the “Palazzo Ducale” in Mantua. When an edition remains true to its sources this certainly does not mean that it is not also practical to use as is demonstrated in this Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo”. Edited by Rinaldo Alessandrini the new publication follows the Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria”. Two contemporary prints of “L’Orfeo” from the years 1609 and 1615 have been passed down to us. Four copies of each of these prints still survive today in public libraries. The later print includes many corrections to the earlier edition and was accordingly used as the primary source for this Bärenreiter edition. However when solving musical problems the editor frequently follows the more coherent style of the earlier print. The numerous interesting variants not only between the two editions but also amongst the eight surviving copies are listed in the critical commentary.This edition of “L’Orfeo” offers in addition to Monteverdi’s somewhat sparse original figures also figures added to the bass line by the editor. The continuo player should however feel free to follow his own judgment. The notation has been when necessary adapted to suit modern practice for example with regard to the clefs. The sections that were originally written in “chiavetta” have been transposed a fifth lower. German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s 1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales Of Hoffmann. Part of the standard opera repertoire Offenbach?s masterpiece is now also published as a ?G. Schirmer Opera Score Edition? for Voices with Piano accompaniment.A monument to E.T.A. Hoffmann this opera fantastique in three acts prologue and epilogue combines three of his grotesque tales moulded into a creative and provocative dramatic entity. The librettist Jules Barbier and Michel Carré chose Hoffmann as the hero of the famous musical fantasy adding the erratic essence ofthe author himself to the stories. Hoffman becomes the narrator and the main protagonist at the same time as he tells the three stories The Sandman The Lost Reflection in the Mirror and Councillor Krespel of his three loves.In setting the superb libretto to music Offenbach raced against time and finally lost dying only four months before the opening with the manuscript in his hand. Par BIZET GEORGES. As an acclaimed opera composer, Georges Bizet admitted that he had no real sensibility for sacred music. His Te Deum is nonetheless a truly fascinating and highly expressive work. From the majestic ?Te Deum laudamus?, to the skillful choral fugue of ?Fiat misericordia tua?, and the opening's powerful recapitulation, the composition shows no trace of the difficulties that beset the young Bizet by his own admission before he finally completed the work in 1858.In the extensive trilingual preface to this Urtext edition, editor Marc Rigaudière illuminates the circumstances surrounding the composition of the Te Deum, a work which occupies a singular position in Bizet?s ?uvre. Par WIDOR CHARLES-MARIE. Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) composed this Mass, Op. 36 in 1878 for the St Sulpice church in Paris. The initial two choirs for which it was composed were comprised of around 200 and 40 voices, while the score for this version is for a choir of baritones and an SATB choir. The Organ part requires an advanced-level of ability as it contains some difficult parts. Divided into five sections, the entire work has been transposed one half step lower ‘ to avoid the awkward key of F sharp major'. These sections are: 1. Kyrie (Moderato & F# minor) 2. Gloria (Vivace & Lento, D major 3. Sanctus (Con brio, A major) 4. Benedictus ( Piú lento, A major) 5. Agnus Dei (Moderato, F# major) This really delicate and emotive Mass, Op. 36 is a piece that stands out by its majesty. Charles-Marie Widor was a great organist who did not only focus on Organ composition.
