The composer opens the setting with the OLD HUNDREDTH tune set in a triple meter, then quickly moves to an original melody as the Flower Carol text begins. Since an invitation to the Emerald Isle, Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) has been fascinated with the local tradition and culture. Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Monch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Madchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive. Of intermediate difficulty, these choral miniatures are suitable not only for professional ensembles but also for ambitious amateur choirs.

Your choir will find this fun and different. Duration: 3:30.

Invictus: A Passion addresses one of the world’s most powerful stories through the lens of the modern world. The texts, written or inspired by women, describe not only human suffering and persecution but also the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. Composer Howard Goodall is uniquely suited to bring these texts to life with music of emotional clarity and sweeping force. This excerpt is scored for soprano solo, SATB choir and piano. This fourth movement of the larger work is inspired by the extraordinary story of Irena Sendler née Krzyżanowska, a Polish nurse and head of Å»egota, the Polish Council to Aid Jews in the Second World War, whose personal interventions saved the lives of approximately 2,500 Jewish children in the Warsaw Ghetto, smuggling them to safety, acts of humanitarian bravery that eventually caused her arrest and torture by the Gestapo. She is honoured as Righteous Amongst the Nations at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem. The Latin texts of this movement are taken from the Book of Lamentations (“My eye hath run down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. My enemies have chased me and caught me like a bird, without cause…â€) and from Psalm 142, the Old Testament being the meeting-point of Sendler’s Catholicism and the Jewish tradition of those whose lives she saved. Duration 6:19.

Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (Behold the Great Priest) comes from the early European tradition of plainchant. Bruckner's setting of the responsory, originally scored for eight-part mixed choir, organ and three trombones, brings certain medieval qualities to an otherwise Romantic-era composition. This transcription for 10-part brass choir is appropriate for intermediate level and above and attempts to retain the majesty, power, and beauty of the original piece. It should be approached as a choral piece: connected and fluid. The harmonic language is essentially triadic; great care should be taken in the tuning of each chord throughout the piece. Instrumentation is for: 3 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba. Listen to the live performance by a young group of musicians conducted by Dr. Paul Stevens, Professor of Horn at KU.

Agnus Dei is a standard Latin text from the Mass, and is part of the Ordinary (the five or six sections of the Mass that remain the same from day to day). With the repetition of the first line of text, the heartfelt prayer of petition and yearning is in three parts. This setting follows the tradition of using similar music for the first two statements, with some contrast in the music for the concluding dona nobis pacem..

This text in the Sacred Harp tradition was first published in 1891, and is filled with enthusiasm for singing and the joy of faith. This one almost gives you double your money, because the highly developed “Alleluia†that begins and ends this piece totally stands on its own and has countless uses in worship. But in the middle, there's a motet-like section on the text “God is our refuge and strength . . . we shall not fear.†It, too, could stand on its own. But put it all together and it is a strong a cappella choral anthem that would be at home in any tradition.

This brief a cappella choral miniature is a reflection on the Transfiguration of the Lord, a Scripture passage observed by many Christian traditions just prior to or during the season of Lent (as well as on the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6). Set in a largely homophonic texture, the piece sparkles with occasional unexpected and delightful chords highlighting the wonder of the Transfiguration.

Ian Venables' setting of four poems of A.E. Housman originally scored for tenor solo, string quartet and piano, here arranged for tenor and piano. Lyrical pieces of intermediate difficulty, sometimes elegiac, sometimes angry. Written in 2004 but very much in the English song tradition of Finzi, Gurney and Warlock these are therefore ideal recital companions to those composers.

These three a cappella movements each originate from different largescale compositions, some for fairly substantial forces. In these works, when the focus is turned on the essence of a statement, I have (probably out of pure instinct) permitted all adjuncts - such as subtle orchestral accompaniment, opulent percussion, soloists, electronics etc. - to fall silent and tried to express myself through pure choral singing. There is a saying originating from the Judeo-Christian tradition of thought: 'The last shirt has no pockets.' Perhaps this can also be applied within the field of music when one is attempting to penetrate to the essentials. Harald Weiss.
