Bach's Christmas Oratorio was composed and compiled for the Christmas season as celebrated in Leipzig in 1734 and early 1735. There are a total of six parts which were intended to be performed on the six major feast days over that 13-day period from December 25 through January 6: the First Day of Christmas Second Day of Christmas Third Day of Christmas Feast of the Circumcision First Sunday of the New Year and the Feast of the Epiphany. This edition is Part One of the oratorio scored for SATB Chorus and Piano.

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio composed in 1734 narrates the story of the birth of Jesus in a cycle of six cantatas with a text probably by Christian Friedrich Henrici (known as Picander) who provided several libretti for Bach during his Leipzig period.Like the St. Matthew and St. John Passions the Christmas Oratorio is narrated by an Evangelist and includes devices from Italian opera such as the recitative and aria. Saint-Saëns's Christmas Oratorio (or Oratorio de Noël) was written in 1858 when he was just 23. This piece was originally scored for five Vocal Soloists Chorus Harp String Quartet and Organ; this the vocal score contains a piano reduction.The Christmas Oratorio opens with a Prelude subtitled 'In the style of Sebastian Bach' harkening back to Bach's Christmas Oratorio. This opening prelude sets the scene for the Christmas story: its lilting pastoral quality creates images of the shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. In the remaining movements the vocal soloists take turns representing different characters such as the narrator ofthe story or as the angel who announces the birth of the baby Jesus while the chorus represents a multitude of angels singing to the glory of the Lord. The final movement of the piece which follows the model of old French Christmas songs is a virtual hymn of praise of all creation in the presence of God.The English version of the text is by N.H. CPE Bach's Magnificat WQ215 for SATB.C. P. E. Bach?s nine-movement Magnificat (1749) the first great vocal work from his Berlin years is among the most magnificent sounding in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the ?Hymn to the Virgin Mary? (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur dignity polyphonic and concertante choral movements sensitive (?empfindsam?) and expressive arias a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.) which is almost one hour in duration would be well suited for example as thecentral work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme.

Fassung Ii. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725.
