Giovanni Gabrielis Sonata Pian e Forte verdankt ihren Namen und ihre Bekanntheit nicht zuletzt der Tatsache, dass sie als eine der ersten Kompositionen überhaupt Angaben zur Dynamik im Notentext enthält. Im Rahmen der Entstehung einer eigenständigen, von der Vokalmusik unabhängigen Instrumentalmusik um die Wende vom 16. zum 17. Jahrhundert zeugt die schriftliche Fixierung solcher aufführungspraktischer Elemente von einer gänzlich neuen kompositorischen Denkweise. Dazu gehört auch die Präzisierung der ausführenden Instrumente durch Gabrieli: zwei Trombonenchöre, die im Diskant von einem Zink bzw. einer Viola angeführt werden. Vol. III of this four-volume critical edition includes fourteen 6-, 7- and 8-part madrigals. Undoubtedly, these materials were largely conceived for use on special occasions – though, to date, it has been possible to identify nothing but an invitation to a banquet, a composition in praise of an unspecified «Sienese gentlewoman», and a homage to Henry of Valois who, in 1574, passed through Venice en route from Poland to his coronation at Reims as king of France. ThePreface, in English and Italian, historically contextualizes the repertoire, briefly describes the poetic texts (discussed in greater detail in vol. This sacred symphony was first published in Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae in 1597. The score has been transposed down a whole town from C to B flat. This work was in all probability written for some religious or civic event and is full of the pomp and splendour evident in Bellini's painting of the procession in the Piazza San Marco.
