Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine’s “Buch der Lieder”. What began as a lyrical intermezzo then developed into “Dichterliebe” a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck. This work still presents an enigma to performers; how Schumann interpretes Heine’s irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with “Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romanticperiod. This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann’s autograph score into consideration an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburst of lieder inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine: ?What a blessing it is to write for the voice!? Schumann wrote to his beloved Clara. It is as though a knot was untied while he was writing the Heine-Liederkreis Op.24. Retrospectively Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of liedcomposition was founded. Twelve Poems op. 35 Set of Songs on Texts by Kerner-As with the Dichterliebe (HN 549) Frauenliebe und Leben (HN 547) or the song cycles with texts by Heine and Eichendorff (HN 548 and 550) the Kerner Cycle op. 35 was written in 1840 Schumann?s ?Liederjahr?. Yet ithas a special place: it was composed in the time immediately following Schumann?s marriage to Clara Wieck.Schumann set a series of poems to music in November during a ?quiet week which went by withcomposing and much loving and kissing? and the cycle was complete by the turn of the year. It contains a great deal of intimate musical innuendos. The first edition of 1841 was soon followed by a second issue many of the songswere published individually and the ?Wanderlied? soon became a core piece in the repertoire. With this edition the songs in Schumann?s cycle are once again being published together in a single volume.

Song Cycle On Poems By Heine. The ups and downs of disappointed love: who could fail to sympathize with the feelings that Schumann immortalized in his song cycle Dichterliebe after Heine? The pieces range from hopeful anticipation (?Im wunderschönen Monat Mai?) to solitary grief (?Und wüssten?s die Blumen, die kleinen?) and bitter sarcasm (?Die alten bösen Lieder?). Schumann knew what he was writing about: the cycle originated in the year of his marriage to Clara Wieck, an event that took place only after years of struggle. The tried-and-tested Henle Urtext edition by the Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa is now also available for singers with low voice: in close collaboration with the experienced pianist and renowned Lied accompanist Gerold Huber, we have adapted the whole cycle, including the four songs of the appendix, for medium and low voices.

Schumann was the first to set a complete cycle of Heinrich Heine?s poems to music. His literary ?forks of lightning? had already fascinated Schumann when he was 17 years old. Night Pieces op. 23-Gloomy premonitions plagued Schumann whilst he was working on his latest composition in 1839. The news that his brother Eduard was dying had deeply shaken him. ?Writing a ?Corpse Fantasy? since Monday ? he wrote in his diary on 31March. While he was preparing the composition for publication three-quarters of a year later he chose the title Night Pieces with reference to E. T. A. Hoffmann. However Schumann probably did not want the work to beperceived as being so nocturnal and dark because he associated with it the desire that it should ?pleasantly remind? one of his brother who had in the meantime died. This is now being publishing it in a newly revised version byErnst Herttrich reflecting the latest in scholarly research.
