Principal versions Paris 1, Paris 2 and Weimar. Part volumes a-d. Composed by Hector Berlioz. Edited by Hugh MacDonald. This edition: complete edition, urtext edition. Linen. New Berlioz Edition (Neue Berlioz-Ausgabe - NBE) Volume 1a-d. Oper (Opera). Complete edition, Score. Hol 76. Duration 2 hours, 45 minutes. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA05441_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA05441). ISBN 9790006494996. 33.2 x 26 cm inches. Text Language: French. Text: Wailly, Léon de. Benvenuto Cellini, premiered in 1838, is inspired by the life of the legendary Florentine goldsmith and Renaissance figure. The premiere was a disatster yet even by Berliozâ??s high standards it contains music of exceptional inventiveness and beauty.
The work is challenging not least due to the three versions which exist:
I The original version (Paris 1) as Berlioz composed it II The version premiered in Paris (Paris 2) after rehearsal and copied into an archival full score III The Weimar version based on the revival in 1852 following changes suggested by Liszt
Our edition offers a solution to the problem of publishing operas which have been heavily revised by their composers, so that any of its many versions may be adopted on stage today.

SKU: GI.G-9890 Composed by Donald L. Trott. Music Education. Choir part. 448 pages. GIA Publications #9890. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-9890). ISBN 9781622774005. In addition to celebrating the history of male choirs in the United States, Conducting Men’s Choirs provides a thorough and practical guide for working with TTBB choruses of any age or experience. The chapters by Jerry Blackstone, Jefferson Johnson, and J. Reese Norris display knowledge gained from over seventy years of collective experience. Additionally, Trott has designed the book to be an outstanding repertoire resource and a window to future possibilities through the inclusion of Marques Garrett’s chapter ‘Composing and Arranging for Male Choirs’ and Gary Packwood’s chapter ‘From Entertainment to Social Justice: Examining Men’s Community Choruses in America.’ The content in Conducting Men’s Choirs represents theory and practice that will benefit all conductors of TTBB choruses. —Kevin Fenton   Florida State University Inspired by Debra Spurgeon’s pioneering book Conducting Women’s Choirs, this companion resource, compiled and edited by Donald Trott, brings together the expertise of eighteen acknowledged authorities on men’s choirs. Conducting Men’s Choirs addresses the unique challenges, considerations, and joys of making music with male singers. The book is organized into three major sections, the first of which contains historical essays on male choirs in the United States. The chapters in this section span a range of relevant topics, including glee clubs in colleges and universities, an examination of some of the nation’s most esteemed and accomplished male choirs, and the role of male community choruses in America. The second section explores key aspects of working with male singers that are vital to the success of any conductor of male choirs. Topics addressed include: How to start a male choir and recruit male singers. Working with middle school boys and the developing adolescent voice. Pedagogical considerations for male voices. Procedures for improving intonation. Standing formations. Warm-ups. Women conductors of male choirs. How to arrange and compose for men’s choirs. A thorough discussion of repertoire for men’s choirs rounds out this resource in the book’s third and final section. Chapter authors explore men’s choir repertoire from a variety of angles: Renaissance music, works by Schumann, Canadian repertoire, and the music of Veljo Tormis. Extensive repertoire listings with hundreds of titles for men’s chorus are also provided for quick and easy reference. Conducting Men’s Choirs is essential for anyone working with male choirs in any capacity. Equally suited for novice teachers and seasoned professionals, this collaborative resource is the culmination of decades of experience and wisdom by leaders in the profession. Donald Trott is Director of Choral Activities at the University of Mississippi (Oxford), where he conducts the Concert Singers, Men’s Glee, and University Chorus. He is also the director of the graduate program in choral conducting and is past president of the Southern Division of ACDA. $45.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

Three Renaissance Pieces
for Treble Voices Vol. 1:
SSA: Shawnee Press
A wonderful set of three tremendous songs by composers from the Renaissance era....(+)
A wonderful set of three tremendous songs by composers from the Renaissance era. All in delightful settings for SSA Upper Voice choir edited by Jerry Weseley Harris. Two cheerful and energetic pieces by Thomas Morley and one affected yet glorious piece by Thomas Weelkes. Besides their obvious musical talents these two contemporaries shared not only a Christian name and occupation but also an acquaintance with William Shakespeare and the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. It is unsurprising that the music of these two contemporaries of the Renaissance period have survived and it is only fitting that works by these two friends should appear in this one edition.

Madrigals by the Renaissance composer Monteverdi provided the inspiration for my own Madrigali. Symbolic images of flames burning and fire recur often in Italian love poems from this era and my cycle on texts employingthis fire motive blends stylistic musical features of the period (word painting modality bold harmonic shifts intricate counterpoint augenmusik etc.) within a contemporary compositional idiom. The music emanates from asingle primal sonority (the “Fire-Chord”) which opens the piece and is found extensively throughout all six movements in myriad forms and manipulations providing motivic unity to complement the poetic. This cycle ofmadrigals has been designated an American Choral Masterpiece by the National Endowment for the Arts.--Morten Lauridsen

Par . Until now, anyone looking for music on the theme of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit for church services and concerts usually had to do so in larger collections that cover the entire church year or parts of it. With Music for the Spirit, there is now a choirbook specifically for the feast of Pentecost for the first time, closing a gap for an important feast of the Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican churches. Over 500 years of choral music from Renaissance to the modern age are covered here with compositions from the German-, English-, Italian- and French-speaking regions. Almost all the great composers of European sacred music are represented, from Palestrina over Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Gounod, and Bruckner to Reger, Parry, Stanford, and Distler. With the chronological order, the development of the genre of the Pentecost motet and sacred choral music in general can be traced easily. All pieces can be performed by mixed choir a cappella or with organ accompaniment. In some cases, the accompaniment has been supplemented or arranged by the editor Stephen Harrap, in individual cases also the choral parts, e.g. when the original was composed for male voices only. The scoring ranges from three to eight voices while the length and difficulty of the pieces likewise cover a broad range for a wide variety of choirs and ensembles. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte et Orgue

New Choral Series) Choral SATB Novello & Co Ltd.

Lully, Lullay was written at the request of Philip Reed, music director of the Bury St Edmunds Bach Choir, which gave the first performance on 17 December 2011 at Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, Suffolk. Inspired by the familiar medieval text of the Coventry Carol , it is sung a cappella and invokes the sense of a lullaby through its metre and lilting melody. The fragility and bittersweet tonality of the opening verse is reflected in the continuous interaction between the tonic and dominant keys and resolving dissonances. This develops into broader passages of increased range and dynamics during the second and third verses, where the melody is passed between the upper and lower voices, clearly invoking the poignancy of the text. The last verse returns to the original theme with subtle harmonic changes and a reflective final cadence. An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Harriet Wybor was born in Leeds in 1986 and read music as an undergraduate at Durham University, followed by an M.A. in composition with Martyn Harry and António Pinho Vargas. Harriet's main compositional interests are sacred and secular contemporary choral and chamber music, and the relationship between music and time. Her work reflects a wide range of influences from renaissance choral music and medieval texts to 20th-century literature and art. Harriet has had works performed by the Northern Sinfonia (conducted by H K Gruber), Psappha, the Allegri String Quartet, St John's College Choir, Durham, the Bury St Edmunds Bach Choir and the Fishburn Band - broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Listen to the Band . After graduating from Durham University, Harriet continued her studies at the University of Edinburgh, where she read for an LL.M. in innovation, technology and the law. She has subsequently pursued a career in music publishing where she works in copyright and composes in her spare time. / Choeur SATB

for four male voices. Par BRYARS GAVIN. Glorious Hill may be performed by a male choir.
Text by Pico della Mirandola (1463-1497) from De Hominis Dignitate.
Glorious Hill was commissioned by the Hilliard Ensemble and first performed by them at its summer Festival of Voices in Lewes, Sussex, in August 1988. It was the first piece I wrote for the ensemble and I focused on the singers' unique ability to move with ease from early music to tonal music of the present day. There were techniques which I asked for which I hardly needed to notate - the staggered breathing of the two tenors to supply a continuous unbroken held note for example - and the piece moves between passages for solo voices and sections of highly chromatic homophony, almost as if the music were switching between the 12th century of Perotin and the 16th century of Gesualdo. Each of the four voices is given its own solo passage, sometimes accompanied, sometimes quietly supported by the other voices.
The title, Glorious Hill comes from the name of the small-town Mississippi setting of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. I wrote the music for the 1987 production of this play at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre, the first time I had written any incidental music for the stage. Williams makes very specific demands in terms of music and there is one particularly powerful scene, the penultimate one, throughout which music and atmospheric sound effects are continuous. The principle character Alma argues passionately about the vital importance of human choice with the man to whom she has, too late, admitted her love. I watched this section every night throughout the 4 week run of the play watching the different ways in which the actress, Frances Barber, played the scene. There is a powerful emotional and philosophical connection between the imagery of this scene and a passage from the Renaissance philosopher Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man which forms the text of Glorious Hill. This passage has been described as one of the few passages in Renaissance philosophy to treat human freedom in a modern way. The text, which is sung in Latin, is addressed by God to Adam before the fall from grace.

Easter Fantasy-Fantasia di Pasqua is a fantasy in which traditional Easter melodies have been used. The work is written for brass band with a separate brass quartet which since this music is often performed in churches the composer suggests should be positioned on a gallery. This creates a double choir effect and perfectly fits the Renaissance-like style. Each of the melodies is played in various dance-like cadences that partly because of the double choir effect will result in a very lively and original performance.

Rome centre of the Western Church and a focus of musical excellence during the renaissance played host to many of the leading Italian church composers of the day including Festa Marenzio and most significant of all Palestrina. However Rome was a truly cosmopolitan centre and so this collection of nine motets draws on works from Spanish composers such as Morales and Victoria who both worked in Rome for a period of time and Northerners such as Desprez and Arcadelt who both sang in the papal choir.

Par FARKAS FERENC. “I wrote this Christmas cantata from Köröshegy at the request of the Council of the Komitat Somogy. When I visited the still unrenovated little church at Köröshegy about ten years ago I had no idea that this beautiful Gothic building would one day be the scene of the world première of one of my works. - The cantata is founded on four pillars: four organ soli which could be described as “ritornelli”, followed by four a cappella choruses with the same melody but different harmonizations. These are settings of the four verses of In Epiphaniam by Janus Pannonius, the most renowned Hungarian poet and humanist of the Renaissance. Between these pillars I have introduced movementsfor choir or for soloists based on Hungarian folk tunes and Christmas songs from Transylvania and the Komitat Somogy: songs of the shepherds, angels and wise men, and, after a pastorale for organ, a large scale mixed-voice chorus intoning Ez karácsony éjszakáján [Holy Night]. A narrator introduces the individual numbers with passages from the Christmas story. An organ postlude concludes the work. ” [Ferenc Farkas] This work may be performed in German, English, French or Hungarian language, accompanied by a chamber ensemble or a larger orchestra./ Répertoire / Petit Orchestre: Récitant, Solistes et Choeur SSAT

Hearing and Composing in the Sistine Chapel-In the late 15th century the newly built Sistine Chapel was home to a vigorous culture of musical composition and performance. Josquin des Prez stood at its center singing and composing for the pope's private choir. Josquin's Rome offers a new reading of the composer's work in light of the repertory he and his fellow papal singers performed from the chapel's singers' box. Comprising the single largest surviving corpus of late 15th-century sacred music these pieces served as a backdrop for elaborately choreographed liturgical ceremonies-a sonic analogue to the frescoes by Botticelli Perugino and their contemporaries thatadorn the chapel's walls.Author Jesse Rodin uses a comparative approach to uncover this aesthetically and intellectually rich musical tradition. Confronting longstanding problems concerning the authenticity and chronology of Josquin's music while also offering nuanced readings of understudied works by his contemporaries the book contextualizes Josquin by locating intersections between his music and the wider soundscape of the Cappella Sistina.Central to Rodin's argument is the idea that these pieces lived in performance and the author demonstrates the interpretations of the music prevalent at the time in which it was composed through a series of exquisitely produced recordings on the companion website. Josquin's Rome is an essential resource for Musicologists scholars of the Italian Renaissance and enthusiasts of early music in general.
