Zoltan Kodaly's op. 1, Enekszo (Singing), this series of songs written on Hungarian folk poetry, first appeared in 1921 at Rozsavolgyi Publishing House. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first edition, a facsimile edition of the work and a new edition with Hungarian and English texts has been published, with great help of Mrs. Kodaly nee Sarolta Peczely. The series of songs written between 1907 and 1909 simultaneously reflects the composer's first encounter with Hungarian folk songs and Debussy's song poetry. Kodaly, who later composed numerous arrangements of folk songs for both solo voice and choir, uses only the texts of folk lyrics in these songs, the melodic world, although reminiscent of Hungarian folk songs in several ways, stems from his own melodic invention. And in piano accompaniments, you can feel the experimental spirit and atmosphere-creating power of the young composer at the same time.

Georg Kreisler was an admonisher, as strict as he was understanding, who saw his uncanny chances in language and music and used them to show his fellow human beings many possibilities of feeling and thinking. The first edition of Lieder and Chanson sums up all of these brilliantly evil-spirited works by Kreisler in several anthologies for voice and piano. Arranged in topics such as death and transience, surreal and philosophical or politics and public order, it offers good access to his work. Volume 7 completes the topics Homeland and Homelessness, Love, Eroticism and Sex and Discrimination, Intolerance and Anti-Semitism with songs like My Home Is in Yemen, The Love Letter, and The Alien..

In composing songs, which Moniuszko wrote from his youth to the end of his life, he was guided by a definite idea. He wished to present Polish society with national, Polish songs, which could occupy an important place in the everyday life of the Polish people, so displacing imported trash. In a similar way Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski, with an extensive and comprehensive series of novels, supplanted the French romance, so popular, especially with contemporary ladies. Having composed a considerable number of songs, Moniuszko conceived the idea of publishing them in separate books under one general title: Songbook for Home Use. The title of this collection is significant evidence of the composers intention: these songs are to be used at home by every and any body in all the different circumstances of everyday life. They should suit the different moods and needs of the heart, so resulting in rich diversity. [Witold Rudzinski].
