This work is based on the 13th Century Dies irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works, including Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan’s Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises. Deux Airs populaires cubains (Dos aires populares cubanos) and Deux Thèmes populaires cubains (Dos temas populares cubanos) were written in the 1960s and published by Ãditions Max Eschig in 1972 and 1978. These two pieces belong to the genre of arrangements of popular songs for solo instruments that was a widespread presence in the plucked-string repertoire from the sixteenth century on. In these two cycles, Leo Brouwer reworks Cuban popular music with his usual instrumental originality. In the first cycle, Brouwer did not alter any of the melodic or structural elements of the original songs, only embellishing these with introductions, harmony, and some structure. In the second cycle however, the original dance was composed by Brouwer himself, imitating Cuban popular music characterised by both Spanish and African influences. Rather than being based on actual folk repertoire, it draws its inspiration from it and attempts to recreate its sonic ambiance. Zigante interventions, made on the scores published during the 1970s, consist of the correction of a few errors and restoring some of the original repeat signs as conceived by Brouwer. Any fingering indicationswere added by Leo Brouwer himself.

Beautifully atmospheric and within reach of advanced students, Fisherman's Song is a poignant addition to every flutist’s repertoire. Chen Yi describes the main theme as evocative of the ornamented pentatonic style often found in Cantonese folk songs, with a gentle piano texture supporting the flute’s melody. The original version of Fisherman’s Song was written for Violin and Piano in 1980. The pentatonic melody represented in the beginning (on Violin) and the ending part (on Piano, with supporting lines on Violin) is in a singable Cantonese folk song style. The middle contrasting section is more active and energetic, with momentum brought to a climax before the recap. The work was adapted for Flute and Piano in 2022.

'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bulow performed Reverie du soir (Op. 19, No. 1) or Theme original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873, i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bulow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition of Variations Op. 19/6. There is, however, no documentary proof which of Bulow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume, Bulow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur from 1890.

Williamsburg Variations takes an original theme reminiscent of songs from early nineteenth-century America, and develops it over several variations into a variety of styles. A great introduction to the idea of theme and variations, this will make your developing orchestra sound great at any festival. This composition was inspired by a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The opening theme is reminiscent of a hymn of the eighteenth century with a hint of Chester in mm. 5 and 15. The variations are indicative of the hustle and bustle of colonial life that required a strong work ethic to survive, and the fife and drums variation shows a glimpse of Yankee Doodle in mm. 34-44. The theme should be played as a legato chorale. The variations are to be played with energy and the D Major Key will enhance that style. In mm. 34-44 the viola, cello and bass quarter notes should be short and accented to imitate field drums. The unison violins are the fifes in this fife-and-drum section. The final variation at m. 52 is a combination of three prior melodies so all lines are equally important. The melodic and moving parts create interest in all the instruments and should provide for an excellent festival or contest piece. I hope your students enjoy playing this music.

Composer's Note Second Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren, oboe and Stefan Bojsten, piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuoso duos, ââ¬Åmeetingsââ¬Â. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord. Formally, Second Meeting is very close to a familiar ââ¬Åtheme and variationsââ¬Â category, although there are seven themes, or melodies, all quite closely related. In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra, trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel, perhaps). The orchestral version is called Mimo 1). Esa-Pekka Salonen.

This beautiful folk melody will capture the hearts of students and audiences. Originally scored for large orchestra, this string arrangement captures the essential qualities often heard in the English style of chamber music for strings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Holst's melody, with its simple pentatonic folksong theme, receives the kind of mystical transformation we often associate with British composers' treatments of their indigenous wellspring---the folksong. All sections share in the melodic themes while passages for a quartet of soloists add textural interest. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
