Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanicmountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement (?Saghalie?) pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The second movement captures the beauty ofthe maiden ?Loowit ? with haunting flute and English horn solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement ?Tanmahawis ? utilizes stark clusters jagged melodic fragments and rhythmicpercussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Score-Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band this three movement work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983.Previously available only in rental we are proud to offer this important work for publication.A note from the composer: Divided into three movements this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instrumentsas well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement the brass section “concertizes” in groups of four brass quintets (2 trumpets horn trombone and tuba or baritone) spread from left toright in back. The saxophones (S A T B) are placed in front of the brass quintets and the woodwinds occupy the front of the stage with percussion on the left and right side. These groups like the brass quintets play in theconcertante style particularly in the first and last movements. At the same time each movement contains individual solo passages (for example timpani and flute in Movement I – “Drum Ceremony” andEnglish horn and other low woodwinds in Movement II – “Elegy”). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of wind and percussion players today and by the incredible growth of wind ensembles orchestras and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.

Pour Cor Anglais (Ou Flûte Ou Clarinette Ou Alto) Violon Et Violoncelle-Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri’s Lyric Interlude: ‘A Study in Pastoral Style’. When in 2008 the composer received the commission for a piece with English Horn from Cecilia Benner patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the Oboe that Berlioz in the Symphonie fantastique placed at the beginning of the ‘Scène aux champs’ making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 atone of the Scarab Club Concerts in Detroit the Lyric Interlude for English Horn Violin and Cello (Op.110a) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint the undulating lament of the beginning rhythmically supple evokes the waving wheat as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8 again pours out making the work evolve towards a slow ecstatic atmosphere close to the last of the English composer’s Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic postcard clichés and servile imitation this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English Horn (or Flute Clarinet or Viola) and Piano Op.110b (AL 30 750)

Sankt Stefans-Choral. As a source of inspiration, the composer used the dazzling, impressive and beautiful world-famous St. Stephen?s Cathedral?the Stephansdom?in Vienna. Often seen as a national symbol of Austria, it stands in the heart of Vienna and has 14 bells, each with its own name. At the beginning of the work, you can hear the ringing of the bells. The main melody softly emerges from this soundscape and returns repeatedly in various instrumentations and different harmonisations. Following a fortissimo section, the hymnal melody ebbs and fades away, the same way it appeared at the beginning. St. Stephen?s Chorale is a solemn moment of contemplation in your concert.

Par ARNOLD MALCOLM. Malcolm Arnold composed his Second Flute Concerto in 1972 for Richard Adeney, who premiered it at the Aldeburgh Festival with the English Chamber Orchestra. Mozart’s masterpiece the PostHorn Serenade was composed in 1779 for the Salzburg University’s ‘Finalmusik’ ceremony that year. While the serenade gained its nickname from the call of the postHorn in the final minuet the interior movements feature compelling concertante sections for Flute and Oboe.It is from the fourth movement that English composer Anthony Collins has skillfully adapted this cversion of the Rondo in G major. Collins himself was a composer of some reputation in the 20th century best remembered for his light Orchestra piece Vanity Fair and for his film scores. This adaptation of Mozart’s demanding and elegant rondo brings the piece into the chambermusic repertoire.

Janá ek composed his Suite forwind instruments Mlád (in English youth) in 1924 so when he was over 70. Numerous sources still survive for this work making it difficult to establish the definitive musical text. For our Urtext edition acooperation with Universal Edition Wien Ji Zahrádka from the Janá ek-Archiv in Brno succeeded in brilliantly surmounting this difficulty: he consults all of the handwritten sources for the edition for the first time and isthus able to give exact instructions for instance regarding the numerous tempo variants.
