French composer, Jean Gilles (1668-1705) received his musical training as a choirboy in Aix-en-Provence. His substantial works are entirely religious, Mass for the Dead being no exception. Gilles catalogue comprises a significant amount of choral work. His choral composing style often alternate passages sung by soloists and the chorus, as is the case in Mass for the Dead. His musical style was influenced by Andre Campra, a leading Opera composer of the day who Gilles succeeded as music master at the Cathedral of Saint Etienne in Toulouse. For all choirs seeking alternative repertoire, Mass for the Dead provides a riveting performance..

In 1884, Josef Rheinberger composed a setting for solo voice and piano of the Christmas poem Morgenstern der finstern Nacht by the mystic Baroque poet Angelus Silesius at the behest of a magazine. 16 years later, he returned to the melody and set it for four-part a cappella choir. Both versions are printed in the choral song sheet. The choral setting - published here for the first time - is a welcome addition to the Christmas repertoire.

Great Baroque church music full of color and powerful imagery! Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing, rejoice and praise his holy name with the trumpets and cornetts! And nature shall join in, the seas shall rage, and the whole world and the rushing waters rejoice. This is such an ideal text for Telemann: The voices rejoice and praise together with the horns, harp, and trombones; and the choir and instruments make the sea roar, the earthquake tremble and the rivers and mountains exult. The Christmas oratorio Die Geburt Christi op. 90 was first performed in 1894 in the St. Thomas Church in Strassburg and today it has been rediscovered. It is the first of a trio of so-called church oratorios by Brahms's friend, Heinrich von Herzogenberg. It was followed by Die Passion op. 93 and Erntefeier op. 104, all of which have been published by Carus in reprints of earlier editions. With these works which are partly neo-baroque, partly late romantic choral works, Herzogenberg commits himself to a new form of the Protestant worship service characterized by a high artistic level, but still near to the congregation. Allowing the choir to be accompanied by instruments outside the closed liturgical form of the service goes back to a concept of the theologian from Strasbourg, Friedrich Spitta. Since Christmas was a good occasion for the choir to perform independently, Spitta decided to put together the text for a Christmas oratorio and to commission Herzogenberg to realize it musically. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4019600.

The Peasant Cantata was written and performed in 1742 as an act of homage to Carl Heinrich Von Dieskau on his becoming 'Lord Of Thee Manor'. The libretto, supplied by Picander, deals with the rejoicing of villagers and their congratulations and good wishes to the new laird and his wife. Many folk melodies are introduced, and most of the numbers are based on merry country dance tunes.

In nicht Ichts - nicht Nichts, Heinz Holliger has set the words of ten selected mystic epigrammes by the seventeenth century Baroque poet Angelus Silesius. The two-line sayings in rhyming Alexandrines undertake a profound exploration of metaphysical issues, posing questions such as What is life, eternity, space and time and the nature of God?

The cantata Ich habe meine Zuversicht BWV 188 comes from the so-called Picander cycle and was written for the 21st Sunday after Trinity in 1728 or 1729. There are some particular problems associated with its transmission. The original set of parts was lost, and the manuscript score only survives in fragmentary form. Probably as early as the 18th century the score was divided up into numerous separate parts in order to make more money, or to be able to provide as many Bach relics as possible for posterity. The first movement, an instrumental sinfonia, is missing apart from the final bars. We simply know that this sinfonia is based on the 3rd movement of the Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1052 in D minor and that instead of the harpsichord, an obbligato organ was envisaged. Its successful reconstruction by the baroque specialist and organist Pieter Dirksen now makes it possible to perform the cantata again complete with the introductory sinfonia. The baroque cantata libretto by Erdmann Neumeister focuses upon the aged Simeon in the Temple, who desires to leave this world and is longing for the hereafter. Telemann's setting is appealing through its poetry, warmth and ardor, and through the exemplary balance of its overall form. The two chorales which begin and end this seven-movement work are fashioned with particular artistry and care. Formally, the center and heart of the work is a motet-like choral movement to the words Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben (Revelation 14:13) - Also suitable as a cantata for Eternity Sunday, and for funerals and memorial services.
