An instrumental movement from the 1749 oratorio Solomon by George Frideric Handel this bright and bustling music is a Baroque favorite often played at festive occasions. The distinctive Howard Cable brass quintet arrangement on which this concertband arrangement is based has long been in the repertory of the Canadian Brass. The group first recorded it for their RCA release Fireworks: Baroque Brass Favorites and it was more recently recorded for the CD Amazing Brass. (3:45)

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band a fanfare and brass band so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name ConZEnSus comes from a combination of the words ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years) ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

Commissioned by the Iowa Bandmasters Association this dynamic new work from Michael Sweeney is written in three contrasting sections. The opening ?Lament? features a plaintive F Horn melody and expansive harmonies.The mood then shifts to an intensely rhythmic dance using an unusual modal scale. In the final section the flutes switch to recorders and a driving percussion ostinato figure helps propel this magnificent piece to a dramaticending. A rewarding and satisfying work from one of today's best composers for young bands.

Named after President Lincoln “Old Abe” was a famous bald eagle who served as mascot for the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Legend of Old Abe is a marvelously descriptive work for young bands that takes the listener on a journey of Old Abe's exploits. From a peaceful and serene opening the work progresses through the sounds of conflict and battle. The mood turns reflective and then triumphant as the music celebrates this amazing true story. La composition originale était pour un orchestre extrêmement grand de 200 musiciens comprenant aussi une banda séparée uneharpe et d?autres instruments spéciaux. Cette nouvelle version a été réarrangée pour formation standard par le compositeur lui-même.

Banda Bella est une marche de concert pleine de vitalité. Après une ouverture martiale les bois développent un motif bouillonnant. Le trio est dominé par un thème dans le registre ténor qui laisse sa place à un intermezzo dans lequel les cuivres conversent en alternance avec les bois. Le thème du trio revient de manière grandiose sur un chant ornementé aux bois.

Pasodoble de Concierto-María Gil Herrero was specially commissioned by Antonio Estevan a great connoisseur and lover of music for wind band. This piece is dedicated to Estevan’s wife María to commemorate the celebration in 2009 of their golden wedding anniversary. It was premiered on 30 January 2010 at the Teatro Cervantes of Sax Alicante province (Spain) by the Banda Unión Musical de Sax under the direction of its conductor D. Roberto Trinidad Ramón.The piece opens with a spectacular introduction leading to an expressive saxophone solo. The rubato accents of the first melodic motif give way to the central section which has a distinct and triumphal character. At Estevan’s request trumpetand flute solos highlight the more flamboyant passages. The soft and harmonious colours of the trio’s exquisite melody lead to a recapitulation of the central section before reaching the final climax.María Gil Herrero a concert pasodoble written in a traditional style will enthral the audience with its outstanding character and typically Spanish musical form.

Fantasía Andaluza para Banda-López Odero is a fantasy written for concert band that incorporates the folk music of the Andalusia people. It features some beautiful songs from the Cadiz province with their fascinating Flamenco-rhythms. The person who commissioned the work requested it be dedicating it to his father López Odero a talented clarinet player after whom the piece is named.

Why should we deny young band students the joy of playing Mozart just because they don't happen to use a bow on their instruments? Mozart belongs to Everyone!
