The British rock band Queen, formed in 1970, are one of the most popular bands of all time. The music of Queen already exists in numerous instrumental arrangements at all kinds of levels. However, arranger Philip Sparke has taken a unique approach: he has created an exceptional medley in a challenging, symphonic style from four of their greatest hits: 'Bohemian Rhapsody’, 'Bicycle Race’, 'Who Wants to Live Forever’ and 'We Are the Champions’. The atmosphere in a busy town park in the spring provided me with the inspiration for this piece. The style of this piece can be described as light music with baroque influences. These baroque influences directly point to the richly ornamental statues, which can be found in the park. Een sfeervol, drukbezocht stadspark in het voorjaar inspireerde Jacob de Haan tot het schrijven van Queen’s Park Melody. De stijl van het werk is te omschrijven als lichte muziek met barokinvloeden - die verwijzen naar de weelderigversierde beelden die zich in het park bevinden. Deze vrolijke compositie is leuk om te spelen en om naar te luisteren.Inspiration bezieht Jacob de Haan also aus ganz unterschiedlichen Dingen. Auslandsreisen, Spaziergängen, Alltagserlebnissen. Aber auch Erfahrungen aus der Vergangenheit. Während seiner Konservatoriumsjahre spielte Jacob de Haan in einer Ska-Band. Speziell für diese Band schrieb ich eine Nummer. Diese Melodie ist mir im Gedächtnis haftengeblieben. Viele Jahre später, während eines Spaziergangs im Park, kam mir der Gedanke, dass die Nummer thematisch auch interessant für ein Brass-Band-Arrangement wäre.“ Queen's Park Melody gehört in die Kategorie ‚Leichte Musik mit barocken Einflüssen’: Letzteres ist ein Verweis auf die üppig verzierten Statuen im Park. This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4thdivision of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.Deze compositie is gebaseerd op de mars uit Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, een werk uit het jaar 1694. In deze fantasia wordt het hoofdthema gevolgd door verschillende in elkaar overgaande delen die voortborduren op hetthema of er een contrast mee vormen. Alhoewel het thematisch materiaal soms zodanig afwijkt dat het werk een geheel eigen karakter krijgt, grijpt de componist toch steeds weer terug op flarden van het origineel. Das Werk war 2017 Pflichtstück in der Leistungsklasse 4 bei den Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK).Cette composition se base sur la marche de la Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II (Musique pour les funérailles de la reine Mary II) d’Henry Purcell, une œuvre écrite en 1694. Dans cette fantaisie, le thème principal est suivi de plusieursmouvements enchaînés ; développé au travers de ces mouvements il est également mis en contraste. Bien que le matériau thématique dévie tellement que l’œuvre acquiert son propre caractère, le compositeur ne cesse de revenir sur des fragments du thème.Ce morceau était la pièce imposée la 4e division du Championnat National de Brass Band des Pays-Bas (NBK) en 2017.

Christmas as celebrated in England is a relatively newtradition dating from the time of Queen Victoria. Herhusband Prince Albert was from Germany and he broughtmany German Christmas traditions with him, including theChristmas tree and Christmascards, and even carols such asHark, the Herald Angels Sing. Philip Sparke has however useda varied selection of English melodies to arrange into his?Festival of Carols?.The choir parts are seperately available (order no. AMP 227-050). Hoewel de Engelsen een lange traditie kennen in het zingen van carols zijn veel van de melodieën die er worden gezongen afkomstig van het Europese vasteland - of uit Amerika. Citadel’s Destiny is a march that can be performed either in concert or on parade. It was commissioned by the Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. A special feature is that it adheres to the conventional codes of military marches, albeit with a modern twist. The title refers to the citadel built by Vauban in Lille, “The Queen of Citadelsâ€, with which the band shares a destiny. This march is still performed by the Infantry Band as part of their traditional concert repertoire.Citadel’s Destiny kan dienen als loopmars, maar is ook geschikt voor een concert. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van la Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. Een speciaal kenmerk: het is gemaakt volgens de conventionele voorschriften voor militaire marsen, maar dan met een moderne twist. De titel verwijst naar de door Vauban gebouwde citadel in Lille, ‘La Reine des Citadelles’, waarmee de band een lotsbestemming deelt. Deze mars wordt nog steeds uitgevoerd door la Musique de l’Infanterie, als onderdeel van het traditionele concertrepertoire.Citadel's Destiny ist ein Marsch, der sowohl im Konzert als auch bei einer Parade aufgeführt werden kann. Elle a été commandée par la Musique de l’Infanterie de Lille. Elle a la particularité de respecter les codes conventionnels des marches militaires tout en ayant une touche de modernité. Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.
