Par MACMILLAN JAMES. A setting of passages from the Book of Revelation, with particular reference to the angels who appear with seven trumpet blasts, heralding a series of apocalyptic scenes. Commissioned by Jeffrey Skidmore, director of Ex Cathedra, and first performed by them at Birmingham Town Hall in 2015. The composer states, ?There is a vividness and strangeness in these dramatic texts, which are endlessly fascinating and disturbing. The instruments used here are based on the various instrumental types mentioned throughout scripture ? trumpets, harp, bells, cymbals, tabor, rebec.? These are scored for mostly in their modern forms, but shofars (Jewish ritual temple trumpets) and early trumpets are also used. The choral writing shows a similar contrast between traditional and contemporary scoring, with polyphony and homophony alongside extended vocal techniques, including Sprechstimme. Leading choral director Paul Spicer comments, ?This is an extremely dramatic work which draws the listener into the apocalyptic story line ? Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis gives new life to the sung Latin Mass texts in an accessible short setting which embraces a variety of jazz styles from the swinging jazz waltz Kyrie to the up-beat Latin-groove Gloria. The smooth jazz ballad Sanctus 7/8 Benedictus and soulful Agnus Dei complete this inspiring Mass setting. Underpinned by Todd’s characteristic jazz harmonies and melodic craftsmanship it is suitable for performance both liturgically and as part of a concert by Mixed Choirs of all abilities. The work can be accompanied by Piano alone (as written or extemporised) Jazz Trio (Piano Bass and Drums)or jazz ensemble (Alto Saxophone 2 Trumpets and jazz trio – parts available separately).

Jan Dismas Zelenka's Te Deum in D for SATB and Orchestra.Two settings of the Te Deum by Jan Dismas Zelenka have been survived: the Te Deum in D major ZWV 145 of ca. 1724 and the present Te Deum a due cori in D major ZWV 146 which was composed in 1731. Whereas the Te Deum ZWV 145 is scored for five voices (?soli e tutti?) and an orchestra including two trumpets and timpani the setting of the Te Deum a due cori which includes five soloists and two four-part choirs as well as four trumpets and timpani and soloistic flauti traversi is magnificently realized in a more decisive manner. The large solemn scoring suggests that the work was composed for aworship service on the occasion of the birth of the Electoral Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony.

A God And Yet A Man was written for the Chester Music Carol Book in 1984. It is a setting of a 15th century poem by an anonymous author scored for SSAATTBB split voice choir. It includes a Pianoreduction for rehearsal purposes.Geoffrey Burgon (1941-2010) was a British composer best known for his film and television scores such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Brideshead Revisited and MontyPython’s Life of Brian. He studied Trumpet and Composition at the Guildhall and spent the early part of his career as a successful Jazz musician.

Tarik O'Regan's Martyr was commissioned by St Albans Chamber Choir in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their founding. It was premiered by the St Albans Chamber Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in St Albans Abbey on 24 January 2009 under the direction of John Gibbons. Martyr was written as a counterpart to Haydn's Missa in Angustiis ('Nelson' Mass) using the same orchestration as Haydn's original version. In venues where an organ is present the optional organ part should always be used. The four SATB solo parts should be performed by a group of singers placed to the side or to the front of the orchestra awayfrom the main chorus. Although written with individual 'professional' solo voices in mind the solo parts may also be performed by a semi-chorus with for example two or three voices to a part. This Mass composed in 1815 but not published until 1846 has great depth whilst also being lyrical and climactic. It was originally set for Soprano Tenor and Bass Soli SATB Chorus Strings and Organ (some years later Schubert added parts for Trumpets and Timpani); however this Schirmer edition of the vocal score contains a piano reduction by Alice Parker.
