Philip Sparke wrote this march for the famous brass band contest held ever year on Whit Friday in Oldham and Saddleworth. Given the competition’s long history (over 120 years), he consciously composed this piece in a very traditional march form. The title, The Conqueror, refers to Alexander the Great’s nickname as well as being something every band aspires to be! Philip Sparke schrieb diesen Marsch für die Teilnahme am berühmten Pfingstfreitag-Marschwettbewerb in England. So weist The Conqueror auch weitgehend die Form eines Wettbewerbsmarsches auf. This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage. Bach schreef een ontelbare hoeveelheid cantates. Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare ‘Prins Hendrik’, from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein’ Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire. Between the Two Rivers werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Fanfare Prins Hendrik uit Aalst. De titel verwijst naar het feit dat Aalst tussen twee zijrivieren van de Dommel ligt. Aalst is een streng gelovige gemeente, dus was heteen voor de hand liggende keuze van Philip Sparke om het beroemde lutherse koraal Een vaste burcht te gebruiken als thema voor een viertal variaties. In the early ’60s he persuaded his father to buy him a guitar and by the end of the decade he had joined a semi-professional band, The Influence. The group soon disbanded and by 1969 Miles was recording with his own group, The John Miles Band, releasing a dozen singles in the early ’70s. In 1975 Miles decided to move to London and secured a deal with Decca Records. By October that year, a newly formed band, John Miles and Co, had released their debut single, Highfly, but their greatest hit, which stormed the British charts in March 1976, was Music.In 1976 bestormde het nummer Music van de band John Miles and Co de hitparades. Variations Paris, 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes’ in 2014, coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. As a result, Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently, this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique.Variations Paris, 1846 werd geschreven voor het 25-jarig bestaan van Fanfareorkest Brass-aux-Saxes uit het Belgische Westerlo in 2014, dat toevallig samenviel met het tweehonderdste geboortejaar van Adolphe Sax, de uitvinder van de saxofoon. Componist Philip Sparke schreef dit werk als hommage aan Sax. Het werk bestaat uit een reeks variaties op een originele koraalmelodie.
