These two chamber music works are one of the main focuses in the oeuvre of Ulvi Cemal Erkin. Lively and spirited, they combine Western European tradition with rhythmic and melodic elements from Turkish folk music. Both are perfectly suitable for music lessons and concert recitals, adding a new interesting colour to the common chamber music repertoire.Erkin (1906-1972) is one of the most important composers of Turkey. He studied piano and composition in France and later returned to his home country where he became professor in Ankara.

Schickele's new piano quartet was written for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival (northwest of Seattle), and would have been his very first piano quartet - except that he had forgotten an earlier, unfinished composition. Happily, an unrelated search uncovered the earlier quartet, and Schickele set about cutting, reworking, and re-composing to create Music for Orcas Island. The quartet consists of four complementary movements: I. Spring Sunshine; II. Rainy, with Fog; III. Lively; and IV. Low-lying Clouds. For intermediate to advanced performers. Duration: 13'.

Better known as one of the foremost conductors of the 20th century, Walter also found a place in contemporary composition in Vienna in the early part of the 1900s. Of particular importance is the Quintet, which was premiered by the Rosé Quartet, with the composer at the piano, and described as a resounding success. Universal Edition was an early publisher of Walter works, and they are pleased to publish this first edition of the Quintet, in cooperation with the Bruno Walter estate at the University of Music and Performing Arts of Vienna. For advanced performers.

For a commission by the Cheswatyr Foundation for the Borromeo String Quartet, Matheson created a three-movement work on the construct of the Borromean rings - a chain of rings in which all rings are connected as a unit, but in which no two individual rings are connected. In this concept, each individual element is every bit as important and essential as the whole, and the whole collapses if any link in the chain is taken away. The work was premiered by the Borromeo String Quartet with Judith Gordon (piano). For advanced performers.

Brahms composed 21 Hungarian Dances beginning in 1869. All were composed for piano, but many of them have been orchestrated and are performed by symphony orchestras. They are based on Hungarian folk songs and dances, and No. 5 is the most popular. Standard interpretation includes many tempo changes with the Violin 1 part requiring more advanced technique.

After the Toccata for piano and string quintet from 1989, the quartet for oboe, violin, viola and piano from 2010 and the piano quintet from 2014, Olli Mustonen has now presented his first work contribution for the tradition-rich pure string quartet occupation. The four-movement quartet ties in with the historical lines of the genre since Classicism and Romanticism and transmits them into a contemporary musical language. Virtuously, the concluding sentence ends in an ecstatic Con fuoco all'Ungharese.

With this edition, Schott publishes the early two-movement string quartet by Bernd Alois Zimmermann for the first time. In a letter the composer wrote: 'I am still messing around with my quartet. This probably is the most concentrated work of composition - and the most abstract.'The string quartet belongs within the context of his early works which focussed on chamber music, unlike those of later years. Until 1945, he created a number of piano pieces and songs, a Suite for Violin and Piano as well as a String Trio (ED 7563).
