David Stock is among the most prolific contemporary composers in the string quartet genre. His tenth quartet is a two-part work inspired by Eastern European itinerant Jewish preachers called “Maggid.”

Amers is the title of a book of poems by Saint-John Perse dedicated to the sea. It is also the title chosen by Kaija Saariaho born in Finland in 1952 for a work completed in the studios of IRCAM in Paris.Amers is the Frenchword for 'navigation beacons' strategically spaced along the coast for sailors. One of the earliest ideas about the piece was the effect of a solo cello 'as a sailor charting a course through a sea of sounds' but his journey scattered with phrases defined by the existing sound material is hampered by the surroundings. To a certain extent Amers is a concerto even though the composer has tried to avoid the usual duel between orchestra and soloist. Instead the piece divides naturally on three levels - each with a certain independence. The cello juxtaposed with the instrumental ensemble and with computer generated sounds cannot reach its scheduled ports of call directlyand is often pulled off course.

The Tricks To Tunes series is designed for teaching mixed string instruments in groups. It is a systematic program developed over many years from many years experience teaching strings in schools. The tutors are aimed at the primary and lower secondary school age group but are also suitable for older beginners.The children learn ‘tricks’ for their fingers or bows which are fun when done in a group. Reading skills are developed at the same time.Each page represents a small step in musical and technical development based on reading music from the very first lessons. Theory homework is included at the end of most sections providing the complete theoryrequired as children progress.The tutors for each instrument are identical in content except where differences are required to accommodate the different instruments.Books 1 and 2 of the series are each intended to cover one year of group tuition based on a school year of 40 weeks. Book 3 provides material for two years. Progress will vary according to the age of the children the size of the group and the extent of their previous musical experience.Additional repertoire at the end of the books provides: extension work for pupils who reach the end of the book before the rest of the group additional work for those who want it and end of year concert pieces. These brilliant tutors make playing music fun as it should be!

This is a celebration of music from the time the pioneers explored the vast reaches of North America. A presentation of eleven imaginative and idiomatic arrangements for elementary cello Grade 1-3 with Piano. Helpful background notes help players to understand the style and spirit of the music. The book is also compatible with the Viola and Violin editions giving an opportunity for young players to experience ensemble playing at quite an early stage.

Per Clarinetto, Violoncello E Pianoforte. Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Rosario (1941), Argentina. He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The catalogue of his compositions, which has nowreached Op. 55, encompasses a huge range of instrumental/vocal chamber music and symphonic works: a vast and articulated catalogue, in which Sergio Calligaris’s composition expresses its inspiration through the dramatic development of a dialecticalcontrast between the two natures of the composer’s personality - the elegiac and the dithyrambic - which confront and interact with each other giving rise to artistic outcomes of a deeply moving nature. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Répertoire / Clarinette, Violoncelle et Piano

Juliana Hodkinson's Is There Something You Can Tell Us for String Quartet.This ten minute piece was written for the Anima Quartet and was comissioned by SWR (South-West German Radio) for first performance at Theaterhaus Stuttgart on 7th June 2014 during the festival 'Lost & Found - Stimme. Text. Tattoo For Four - A drill for Clarinet in Bb Violin Violoncello & Piano (2017).  Dedicated to Ensemble Nordlys. Parts are available: WH32974A Programme note TATTOO FOR FOUR is in reality the same piece as TATTOO FORTHREE from 1984 but with a fourth voice - for violin - added. Forperformances of the older piece just omit the violin part. The'hidden' 1984 piece has been slightly revised so the originalperforming material is now obsolete. The first piece in the TATTOO series was TATTOO FOR ONE for solo clarinet also written in  1984. Reaching back to its 1984 origins TATTOOFOR FOUR follows standard accidental procedure.(Poul Ruders)

'As the title suggests my Serenata Notturna evokes the atmosphere of night music. Following a reflective opening where the pitch development outlines a twelve-note series the music gradually becomes more agitated developing into a kind of danse macabre eventually reaching a powerful climax. The music then subsides into a much more tranquil atmosphere and the previous dissonant material transposes itself into a simple melody (like a lullaby) uttered by the cello the outline of which both melodically and in terms of the accompaniment figuration has already been present in the piece since the beginning. Thus the turmoil of the first part of the work becomes transfiguredinto something much more peaceful - hence the quotation that prefaces the score: 'out of darkness cometh light'.'Edward Gregson

George Nicholson's Salut for String Quartet. The death of Peter Cropper in May 2015 was an immeasurable blow to the musical community especially to those of us who knew him not only as a wonderful wise musician but also as a warm colleague and friend. His unceasing devotion to the cause of music and to the promotion of excellent standards in performance was in my experience beyond compare. The finest tribute we can pay him is to continue to make music to the best of our ability and to go on reaching out to continue to explore and learn. I always felt that I would need to commemorate Peter in a piece for StringQuartet the medium he was most obviously associated with and in Salut it is understandably the first Violin part that has pride of place. The piece develops contrasting textures and registers and above all it is concerned with the influence of the extremely high Violin writing at the beginning on the rest of the ensemble. - George Nicholson Salut was first performed by the Ligeti Quartet Firth Hall University of Sheffield 17 May 2016.
