String Quartet No. 2-Quasi Una Fantasia was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by the Beigler Trust Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts and the Kosciuszko. This edition is a set of parts for 2 Violins Viola and Cello.

Quartet in C Minor is in four movements with a total duration of about 25 minutes. The opening Allegro is Dvorák-ish in its lyricism though there is a darker more brooding atmosphere towards the close. It is tempting to detect a hint of folk-song in the theme of the Andantino played by the Viola but that may be stretching hindsight too far. The movement has a wistful melancholy that carries over into the following Intermezzo a song-like episode containing some of the most virtuosic writing in the work. The last movement is a theme and six variations with a fugal ending. The theme is ballad-like with a suggestion of 18th-century elegance. Modality creeps into thesecond Adagio variation and there is rhythmic exhilaration in the succeeding Presto. What can be admired in this attractive quartet is its conciseness. This String Quartet was his first major composition of any kind.

Making music in a quartet uniquely nurtures young string players’ musical development, ensemble playing, listening to each other, and intonation. So, what could be more obvious than introducing the scoring of this genre, often referred to as chamber music’s supreme discipline, as early as possible. Indeed, composers have all along advised the classical string quartet’s outstanding compositions, but they are hardly easy to play for beginners. Here, with the present collection, is where Eva-Maria Neumann comes in. 3. Streichquartett. Par FELDMANN WALTER. Der « noyé » [der Ertränkte] ist eine Gruppe von Kompositionen, die alle von einem einzigen Stück abgeleitet sind, von meinem ersten Streichquartett. Das Original, « . . . à tournoyer » [1990], und seine drei heute noch gültigen Folgekompositionen sollen aber nicht zyklisch aufgeführt werden : sexe-tuor [für Oboe oder Piccolo und einen Nachhall], le sexe du noyé [für Oboe und Elektronik] und le second tour du noyé. Am Schluss der Arbeit, die sich ursprünglich von 1994 bis 1997 erstreckte, steht das im Jahr 2004 völlig neu überarbeitete dritte Streichquartett, das den Kreis zur Ausgangsformation wieder schliesst. Der « noyé » stellt die Entwicklung eines eigenen, von denTonhöhen abgeleiteten rhythmischen Systems dar, das später die Komposition meines Hauptwerks mitbedingen sollte : « monstrueuse vécut dans le cadre » la mémoire für Solo-Viola und grosses Ensemble in 6 Gruppen, nach einem Text von Anne-Marie Albiach. Die vier Instrumente sind ungewöhnlich angeordnet: An der Stelle des Primgeigers sitzt hier - wie bei den vorhergehenden Streichquartetten - der Bratschist, so dass die zwei tieferen Instrumente die zwei höheren umranden. Jedes Instrument ist in einem der sieben Teile solistisch behandelt, die Bratsche im ersten, die 1. Violine im dritten, die 2. Violine im fünften und das Cello im letzten Teil, so dass die Hauptstimmen in Drehbewegung von links nach rechts wandern [tournoyer : im Kreise drehen]. Die Einsätze, Dynamik und Spieltechniken der einzelnen Instrumente entsprechen genauestens denjenigen des 1. 'Diacritical Marks was written for the Chiara Quartet in 2011 and is in eight short movements. I have a huge anxiety about string quartets; they are normally meant to be giant expressions of a composer’s emotional life. Here I focused on details: a tiny dot above a letter a tiny swivel of the bow. The first and last movements are energetic and driving and the middle movements are more lyrical rhapsodic and/or floating. The quartet is bound together by a piece of drone music found in movements 3 5 and 7 in which the second violin and the viola play an interlocking repeating pattern ad infinitum while the cello and first violin spin very long outrageous lines on top. The piece lasts just under 20 minutes.' —Nico Muhly

From 44 Duos For 2 Violins-Bela Bartók's 44 Violin Duos or selections therefrom have been the source of arrangements for a variety of instruments such as for piano (one set by the composer the Petite Suite) band as well as duos for every member of the string family even contrabass. These all followed the original concept: a pair of identical instruments. This set for viola and violoncello is intended to fill a gap where two instruments an octave apart can produce the broader tonal range. (P. Bartók)

Commissioned in honour of Raymond and Elizabeth Chenault for their 38 years of service as Organists and Choirmasters of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta where it was first performed on All Saints’ Sunday November 3 2013. Par D\'ADAMO DANIEL. ?Quatuor n°2? was first performed by the Tana string quartet on April 14, 2013, at Radio France, Paris. ?I conceived a piece whose principal subject was going to consist in the description of a minuscule sonic element. The description of this tiny initial material would be so precise, so detailed that, deployed on a much larger scale than its original one, it would occupy the entire duration of the piece. At that point, I just had to choose a sound model as the starting point of the piece, the sound that would best characterize the string instruments themselves: the noisy sound produced by the bow barely coming in contact with one of the strings, getting ready to acquire speed, weight, acceleration, and producing a full sound of a violin, a viola or a cello??
