Performance Score and Parts-This scholarly-critical edition is based on all the known sources whether printed or handwritten that have come down to us for these frequently played pieces. By closely scrutinizing the source material the editor has arrived at interesting findings that considerably differ from earlier editions of these works. Rather than taking as her principal source Le Clerc’s 1740 print of Sonatas I to VI – an edition probably made without the composer’s consent – the editor has examined the Naples and Wiesentheid manuscripts prepared under Vivaldi’s direct supervision. The editor has also managed to identify a previously unknown source forSonata RV 44. All departures from the sources in the printed text and all editorial additions are listed in the critical report. Cellists are thus given ready access to every alternative reading including deleted bars and the many inevitable variants in articulation. A detailed preface provides essential information on sources and their assessment with a section on performance practice offering valuable suggestions on interpretation. Edition specially prepared for the ABRSM & TRINITY GUILDHALL exam syllabuses-Vivaldi was familiar with the technique and idiomatic qualities of the cello and writing for the cello seems to have drawn from Vivaldi a special empathy: there is a degree of seriousness and expressive depth which is encountered much less consistently in his violin music. At the end of the eighteenth century, cellist and composer Jean-Baptiste Bréval wrote not only virtuosic concerti for his instrument, but also easier sonatas and duets that still belong to the core repertoire of pedagogical cello literature. Opening with impressive chords, the Sonata in C-major op. 40 no. 1 also offers beginners the chance to savour beautiful melodies and master smaller shifts in position. The Parisian first edition of 1799 leaves the choice of accompanying instrument open. For this reason, this Urtext edition offers several options: a two-part score from which a second cello may comfortably provide accompaniment during lessons, as well as a moderate setting for piano that may be used in concerts. Rounding off this starter kit for cello literature is a carefully marked solo part.

Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi?s ?uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi?s autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part.
