More Classical Highlights is the follow-up to Classical Highlights, a collection featuring arrangements of classical themes dating from the 17th century up to the19th century. The parts are quite easy and attractively written, but the arrangements stay as faithful as possible to the original works. Baroque music is represented with two highlights: the well-known Canon by Pachelbel may well be the most performed 17th century composition. The power of the piece lies in a bass line of only eight notes, above which the melodic line of the round itself develops. Réjouissance from Music for the Royal Fireworks is a very joyful composition bythe Anglo-German baroque composer Handel. The 18th century classical style gives us the refined minuet by Boccherini, the Italian composer who wrote a wealth of chamber music. The 19th century features in three famous works: the lively Marche Militaire No 1 by the Austrian composer Schubert originates from 3 Marches Militaires for four-handed piano. The Can Can from Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is the best-known separately performed piece by the operetta composer Offenbach. Following this exciting dance music there is the beautiful, lofty Largo theme from the second movement of Czech composer Dvorákâ??s From the New World Symphony. In short: Six varying arrangements - challenging and very suitable for performances!

The String Quartet no. 4, subtitled Dedication, was commissioned by the CNDM of Madrid to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven and was written for, and dedicated to, the Cuarteto Casals (2017). This one-movement work, lasting some 11 minutes, is based on a small motif from the op quartet. 130 as a tribute to the German master. The work, that explores the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the quartet medium, has aternary arrangement, with a slow introduction and a conclusive stretta on the B-flat note (like the one that opens Op. 130). Its course includes marked contrasts between the contemplative, lyrical, static and suspensive sections -in the manner of stagnations - and those with a more lively tempo, playful and occasionally festive.

Bohuslav Martin (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer, writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. His StringTrio was published in 1951. Martin himself was a violinist and many of his experiments in composing for solo instruments and small ensembles saw him write for his own instrument and for the familiarstrings. String Trio is made up of two movements; 1) Allegro and 2) Poco moderato. With a typical performance lasting about 15 and a half minutes, the String Trio for Violin, Viola andCelloprovides advanced string players with an exciting, challenging and inspiring ensemble work, addressing a variety of musical features. Martin 's String Trio is essential to aspiring stringensembles.

This is the 2013 version (reduced strings) of Per Nørgård's Remembering Child - Viola concerto No. 1 (1986) - Two Movements for Viola Solo (or Cello solo) and Chamber Orchestra. Programme Note: The title refers to the original meaning of the word remembering: Making whole. The work should not be considered as a sort of requiem for Samantha Smith - the late 13 years old fighter for nuclear disarmament - but as an evocation of the childish, creative forces in all people, young and old. Therefore the work applies thematic material of a certain dawning quality, including two Gregorian chants, appearing intertwined in the beginning of the 2. movement. And therefore the workalso may be considered as a tribute to the still living child-heretics, fighting against the global lunacy of grown-up, such as Eamon Burke, the Australian boy, continuing, independently, the work of Samantha. REMBERING CHILD was commissioned by St. Paul Chamber Ochestra and dedicated to Pincas Zuckerman, soloist at the premiere performance (Sept. 12, 1986). Per Nørgård.

No matter the occasion, string quartets are always in demand. Music for Celebrations features eight works by composers ranging from Marc-Antoine Charpentier to Charles Gounod which rank among the most popular wedding classics, with many of the pieces also well suited for other occasions. The arranger Anthony Gröger has succeeded in transforming the works, some of which originally had extensive instrumentation, into compelling string quartet arrangements that are also easy to play while preserving much of the familiar character of the originals. The third violin part, which can replace the viola part if no violist is available, is an added bonus.

Zigmund Schul, who was born in Chemnitz in 1916 and died in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1944, is one of the artists neglected in efforts to explore the music of the so-called 'Theresienstadt composers'. In collaboration with the TerezÃn Music Memorial Project in Tel Aviv and the memorial site Yad Vashem, Bote & Bock is publishing, in no particular order, amongst the works of other composers, the complete works of Schul, who was a pupil of Hindemith and Hába. These works include chamber music for strings, vocal and choir works as well as a fugue for piano. The 'Duo', written in 1943, is one of Schul's most extensive surviving works and is one of the most important works ever written for this duo formation – it is an invaluable addition to the repertoire.

The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program.

Henri Casadesus was passionate about early instruments, as we know from a number of photographs showing him with viola d’amore, the subject of a manual he wrote entitled Tecnique de la viole d’amour. The Concerto en Ut mineur was first published in 1947 by Mica Salabert. The first edition gives the so-called “original†part for solo violocello together with the score which, according to the preface, has been adapted for viola or cello or violin by Casadesus. However, stylistic analysis of the piece, together with some musicological research carried out after the appearance of the first edition reveals that the “original†version for violoncello, on which the adaptation was supposed to be based, cannot be attributed to Johann Christian Bach, but is rather a work imitating his style written two centuries later. In spite of this, Concerto en Ut mineur encountered considerable success and continues to be studied and performed by both violinists and violoncellists today.

Quartetto Sereno - String Quartet No.21 Op.197 (op. posth.) by Vagn Holmboe.
Holmboe's last quartet work, which is unofficially also String Quartet No. 21, was the last work he ever composed, and was unfinished on his death in 1996. His pupil Per Nørgård has finished the quartet, and himself characterizes his contribution by saying that the score existed “in an only partly completed form, which could however be written out with only a few cases of doubt”. With only two movements and a playing time of about nine minutes it is at its existing length the shortest of Holmboe's stringquartets. The first movement takes the form of one long arch in a rocking triple time which constantly shifts among different tempo and pulse sensations. At the same time the rhythmic energy increases until the movement, in a faster Con moto tempo accelerates to a more flowing 12/8 time, coloured both rhythmically by cross-rhythms in duple time and timbrally by harmonics in the viola. In its middle section, Con fuoco, the movement culminates in both tempo and expression until it falls calm in brief recapitulations in reverse order of the first two sections. The rocking feeling continues in the second movement, but now at a more extroverted level from the outset, Allegro and pizzicato. The energy builds up further as the mood intensifies to Con fuoco, while all instruments go over to bowed playing, but like the first movement, this movement ends Adagio here however not as a gradual attenuation but through a sudden shift in tempo to a calm, imitative passage before the movement slowly thins out to the almost inaudible through a last, dense, open sounding chord with a brief violin solo above it.
The quartet is dedicated to Holmboe's wife MeLa May Holmboe, and was given its first performance by the Kontra Quartet on 22nd March 1997 at the Carl Nielsen Academy of.
