In 1884 the Norwegian city of Bergen celebrated the 200th birthday of Ludvig Holberg, one of its most famous sons and a symbolic figure of the late Baroque era. For this occasion Grieg wrote the piano suite Aus Holbergs Zeit , which he orchestrated for string orchestra. To this day, the Suite - particularly in this arrangement - ranks among Grieg's most popular works. By using the romantic string sound, Grieg brings the late Baroque orchestral suite and its various dance forms to life again. Along with the string serenades of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Aus Holbergs Zeit is regarded as the third great late-romantic work for string orchestra. According to Jouni Kaipainen, the fourth string quartet (2006) is one of key works of Seppo Pohjola (b. 1965) and holds a place as a landmark in Finnish quartet literature. Of the composer's five string quartets, it is the longest and has the widest thematic arcs of his quartets. Seppo Pohjola has gone through a variety of styles in his musical career. He began as a strict Modernist, progressed towards Expressionism and took on board Romantic influences before ending up in the early 2000s in (a reformed brand of) Modernism again. Osmo Tapio Raihala describes the end result thus: The 'new' Pohjola often anchors his style in a frenetic pulse through which he builds musical processes. Duration c. 33 minutes. Score (A4) and parts (B4).

Kimmo Hakola's String Quartet No. 4 op. 95 (2016) was commissioned by the Kimito Island Music Finland and it's dedicated to the Meta4 Quartet. In composer's words, it is the floundering, playful, if necessary defiantly dramatic, surprising, capricious and unrestrained tour de force of a youthful entity.Kimmo Hakola has gone through a number of styles and influences in his career as a composer, his idiom expanding at times to embrace Romanticism, Orientalism and klezmer. He has attained international recognition with an output that spans various genres from intimate solo works to full-length operas such as La Fenice (2011) commissioned by the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Many of his works are expansive and epic: his Piano Concerto (1996), for instance, clocks in at 55 minutes. Hakola says that he sees music as drama. His dramas explore almost Shakespearean extremes, from moments of raging 'sound and fury' and violent battles to quiet moments of meditation and heart-rending monologues.

When his musical triad op. 192 was created in the winter of 1873/74, Raff was one of Germany's most successful composers and the central artistic authority in the Hessian spa, royal residence and imperial city of Wiesbaden. With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions: Opus 192 No. 1 (in C minor), as Suite in the ancient style, has with Baroque labels stylized dance movements follow one another. Die schone Mullerin [The Fair Maid of the Mill] op. 192 No. 2 (in D major), on the other hand, interprets the suite as a sequence of chapters in a musical narrative and thus becomes probably the first tone poem in string quartet scoring. In the third quartet (in C major), of which Raff the artist was proudest, other genre designations mix in among the dance movements, and with its free succession of different movement types, not usual for a sonata, it preserves structural openness. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.

String Quartet No.2 was written in 1951, and dedicated to Percy and Ella Grainger. It is recognised as one of his least extravagant creations, but is nevertheless a solid work which is continually underappreciated. This is the set of parts.
Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer, pianist and poet. His most popular works, which he is largely remembered by today, were written in the years preceding the Second World War, however he continued to compose prolifically, in the face of indifference from the outside world, right up until his death at the age of 91. His music is predominantly in the Romantic style, and serves as atasteful reminder of a bygone age.

The principal post-Romantic Danish composer, Carl Nielsen, was born in 1865, the son of a painter and village musician. Childhood experience as an amateur performer led to subsidised study at the Copenhagen Conservatory and a long career during which he developed his own personal style of composition, in particular in a series of important symphonies. This string quartet includes score and parts.
