This new scholarly-critical edition of String Quartet Op.127 the first of Beethoven’s late quartets follows upon Urtext publications of Opp.18 59 74 and 95.Once more the editor is the renowned Beethoven authority Jonathan Del Mar. All surviving sources have been consulted including sketches to clarify the conflicting readings in the autograph. Piano Quartets-Il est fort regrettable que Beethoven n?ait composé que quatre quatuors avec piano car ces quatre opus font partie des ?uvres les plus appréciées du genre. Trois d?entre eux les quatuors WoO 36 furent composés alors que Beethoven était encore à Bonn et comptent parmi ses meilleures ?uvres de jeunesse. Bien qu?ils soient encore animés de l?esprit mozartien ils por-tent déjà la patte personnelle de Beethoven. La réutilisation du mouvement lent du troisième quatuor dans sa première sonate pour piano op. 2 no 1 témoigne de l?affection que le compositeur continua à leur porter par la suite. Le quatrième quatuor est une autre version du quintette avec instruments à vent op.16.

The Op.42 Notturno for Viola and Piano is an arrangement of the 1796-97 Serenade in D Op.8 arranged by F. X. Kleinheinz (with Beethoven's approval) for Viola and Piano. The piece is comprised of seven shortmovements. The first is a simple march while the second is an Adagio. The ensuing minuet is attractive and proves to be an interlude between two Adagios of which the second alternates effectively with a contrastingAllegro molto Scherzo section. There follows an attractive Polonaise and a theme-and-variations marked Andante. A reprise of the opening march concludes the work. Overall it is a delightful minor compositionin Beethoven's vast output.

Beethoven completed his String Quartet Op.135 at Wasserdorf Castle in Gneixenhof, where he sought to recuperate with his nephew Karl after the latter?s failed suicide attempt in summer 1826. It stands out among his late quartets owing to the often cheerful, almost pastoral character of its four movements. Since Beethoven?s death it has often been interpreted as an attempt to take wise and positive stock of the mishaps that had befallen him in the preceding years regarding his life situation, family and health. This interpretation is strongly suggested by the final movement, ?Der schwer gefasste Entschluss? (The Difficult Decision), with its motto ?Must it be? It must be! It must be!? The editing of this quartet proved especially complex, for the authentic sources were reworked at various stages by the composer.
