Mendelssohn's ConfessionThe Reformation Symphony, misleadingly numbered posthumously as 5 by its publishers, was Mendelssohn's first confrontation with the large symphonic form in Beethoven's wake. Linking it conceptually with the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 1830 seems to have first occurred late in the progress of its composition, yet the premiere did not take place until 1832 and ultimately even enabled the composer to distance himself completely from his work and its concept. Thanks to access to a new source [or, ... new access to sources... or ...new access to a source...?], this edition can now finally refute the legend that a separate original or early version of the symphony once existed. $334.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Orchestra (2.2.2.2 - 2.2.0.0.oph - timp - str) SKU: BR.PB-5364 Concert Overture No. 1 - Urtext based on the Leipzig Mendelssohn Complete Edition. Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Edited by Hans Christian Schmidt. Orchestra; stapled. Partitur-Bibliothek (Score Library). Christian Martin Schmidt is laying bare to musical practice the original form of Mendelssohn's epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time. Overture; Romantic. Full score. 72 pages. Duration 12'. Breitkopf and Haertel #PB 5364. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.PB-5364). ISBN 9790004211458. 10 x 12.5 inches. Autograph lays bare Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream To this day, Mendelssohns epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream has been performed on the basis of a more than dubious transmission. Neither the first edition of the parts (1832), and certainly not the print of the score based on these parts (1835) go back directly to the autograph of the 17-year-old composer, which is now located in Krakow. No wonder, since Mendelssohn had breezily given away his original at an early date. The result: during his lifetime, versions were published with his authorization, even though they were full of unintended inconsistencies. Yet the autograph of 1826 is unequivocal: it is clear, practically free of irregularities and diverges considerably from the corrupted printed version. Christian Martin Schmidt comes up with occasionally differing musical passages, but above all with logical and compositionally compelling performance instructions, laying bare to musical practice the original form buried beneath layers of falsified material for the first time.

Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.PB-5505). ISBN 9790004211519. 10 x 12.5 inches. A visit to the opera whetted the composers creative appetite to explore the fairy-tale-like theme of Knight Raimunds love for the beautiful mermaid Melusine, which provided the basis for Mendelssohns fourth concert overture. As usual, Mendelssohn worked out the composition in his mind before committing it to paper, a task he most likely began towards the end of March 1833. The works premiere performance took place in London on 7 April 1834; the revised version was given its first account in Leipzig on 23 November 1835. Its ranking as No. 4 of the concert overtures was assigned around 1857 in a posthumous edition.(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue). $65.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Mendelssohns overture drew its inspiration from two poems by Goethe which had already inspired Ludwig van Beethoven to write a choral work on them with orchestral accompaniment. The larger part of the work on this piece must have been carried out in the summer of 1828. The first public performance took place in Berlin on 1 December 1832. The revised version of the work was first performed in Leipzig on 20 April 1834. Its ranking as No. 3 of the concert overtures was laid down when the score was first printed in 1835 (Breitkopf & Hartel).(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue). $66.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

A Programmatic Declaration of BeliefFelix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his Reformation Symphony for the celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the Protestant declaration of faith. Owing to various and only partially explained reasons, there was no performance in 1830, the year in question; it was only two years later that the composer conducted the premiere of his work, now heavily revised, in Berlin. There was only one more performance in Mendelssohn's lifetime, this one conducted by Julius Rietz in Dusseldorf; the composer had since distanced himself from his opus.Conceived for the concert hall, the symphony formulates its theological references through the integration of various motives. This occurs in the finale, for example, in which Mendelssohn quotes the Luther chorale Ein feste Burg in the flute, from where it builds up to a triumphant principal theme. The strong extra-musical aspect must have been one of the reasons for the composer's later avoidance of this score, especially since Mendelssohn was becoming increasingly skeptical about explicitly programmatic music in the instrumental domain. Next to the Dusseldorf performance material of 1837, two scribal copies have been examined for the first time; they transmit the main stages of the version of 1830. $96.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Edited by Thomas Schmidt-Beste. Orchestra; Softbound. Partitur-Bibliothek (Score Library). To all extents and purposes, Germany is the land of artists, wrote Mendelssohn in 1831 while on his travels in Italy; but Italy, he added, is the land of art. Everywhere he went in Italy, the 22-year-old composer found impulses for his symphony. Symphony; Romantic. Study Score. 96 pages. Duration 28'. Breitkopf and Haertel #PB 5522-07. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.PB-5522-07). ISBN 9790004212530. 6.5 x 9 inches. To all extents and purposes, Germany is the land of artists, wrote Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1831 while on his travels in Italy; but Italy, he added, is the land of art. Indeed, everywhere he went in Italy, the 22-year-old composer found impulses for his symphony: I have to save the work until I have seen Naples. But although the country fired his inspiration: It will be the merriest piece that I have ever written, he did not actually write the Italian Symphony there. This did not occur until early 1833, when Mendelssohn obtained a commission from London, where he then conducted the first performance in May 1833. Begun the following year, his revision of the piece remained fragmentary, and the composer no longer performed the work himself. The familiar London version thus represents the only closed form of the work which the composer presented to the public. This is the version of the Italian Symphony that is now appearing in the Breitkopf Urtext collection based on the Complete Edition. $21.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

The Overture to Ruy Blas, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's last overture, was not composed as an autonomously conceived score, but as the opening piece of a stage work. Nevertheless, its immediate success at the Leipzig first performance in 1839, as well as the fact that no further contributions to Victor Hugo's drama followed from Mendelssohn's pen soon made it well known in the concert hall. The work's special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based. $79.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Thanks to this arrangement for chamber orchestra, a performance with smaller forces is now possible, and presents an attractive alternative for performing Mendelssohn's first oratorio - not only in times of Corona. For it is often considerations of space, a limited budget, or the size of the chorus which call for flexibility in scoring. The arrangement is based on the Carus Urtext edition. By reducing the symphonic wind and brass in particular, the volume of sound is more restrained, but nevertheless the symphonic character and a wide dynamic range are retained. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores, choral scores, and practice aids of the existing Carus edition can still be used.
Major oratorio can also be performed by smaller choirs Wind and brass parts of the original version reduced to just seven single instruments vocal scores and choral scores from the original version can be used carus plus: the work (original version) is available in carus music, the Choir Coach, and in the Carus Choir Coach (Audio only) series. . Certainly Robert Schumann was right when he stated soon after Beethoven's death that the latter's conception of the symphony as a great, universal confessional work was hardly to be continued by the next generation of composers. He saw a solution to the dilemma in the creation of autonomous concert overtures, such as those written, for instance, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Four of his overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the Trumpet Overture, begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 und 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Dusseldorf, and London.

Midsummer Night's Dream -
Overture Op. 21 Orchestra [Facsimile] Barenreiter

E-moll Op. 64-Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto op. 64 is a key work of the 1...(+)
E-moll Op. 64-Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto op. 64 is a key work of the 19th century adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the ‘child prodigy’ Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the soloviolin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn’s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter’s correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard’s playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor Clive Brown is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.- New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs- Revised Urtext edition- With a separate booklet on performance practice (BA9060) (Eng/Ger)- Full score in the revised early and late (popular) versions (BA9099)

Ouvertüre. Autograph: Biblioteka Jagiellonska Kraków-An enchanted night virtually fragrant dreams floating fairies – the sensory associations evoked and fashioned by the music of Mendelssohn’s overture “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” are almost inexhaustible.Written by the composer in 1826 in a carefree summer spent between the summerhouse and his siblings this is without doubt Mendelssohn’s most popular concert overture. The renowned musicologist Friedhelm Krummacher shows in the introduction how finely Mendelssohn interwove motifs and themes. He also looks into the origins of the work especially a conjectural firstsketch which is reproduced in facsimile in the appendix. To mark the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth B?renreiter in cooperation with the Biblioteka Jagiellonska Krak?w published a high-quality facsimile designed for the bibliophile vividly bringing the composer’s delicate handwriting to life.

In 1832 the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony the ?Italian? based on Mendelssohn?s experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833 conducted by the composer.Today the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks though at its premiere and both the following performances the work was not entirely positively received.Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834 he revised the last three movements but didnot complete this revision. To this day the early version of the ?Italian? is the one played everywhere whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter?s critical new edition edited by Christopher Hogwood includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833 together with the last three movements in the composer?s revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version.- A famous work for the Mendelssohn anniversary year in a new Urtext edition.- With the well-known early version and the composer?s revised version.- Includes an informative foreword in English and German.- With facsimile pages.- Full score & performance material (BA9094) available for sale.
