The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3103000.

The cantata Nur jedem das Seine (Do justice to all men) BWV 163, for the last Sunday of the Church Year 1714/15, belongs among to those chamber music works which Bach composed for the Weimar Schlosskirche. The instruments are limited to strings, although two obbligato violoncellos are included which together with the solo bass singer and the continuo form a bass quartet unique in Bach's works. The final chorale of the cantata is handed down only as a fragment and was newly reconstructed for our edition by Thomas Riegler.

Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. The heroic bass aria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms a weighty counterpart to the opening movement. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104200.
