Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concertband premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de música de Málaga. The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, FANTASIA, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the piano, which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, BALLAD, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The thirdmovement, THE KING TRIUMPHANT, pays homage to Steven’s late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name ('Rex' being Latinfor 'king') as well as his love of Eric Ball’s Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

T the beginning of the 1980s Alison Moyet was discovered by Vince Clarke, who - in search of greater independence - had left the successful band Depeche Mode. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don’t Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.

With Emperor, French composer Thierry Deleruyelle wanted to create a descriptive musical work depicting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The first movement represents the idiosyncrasies of this famous personality as well as his dramatic mood swings. The second movement is dedicated to his great love, Josephine Beauharnais. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.

Le troisième et derniertableau - D’Austerlitz Waterloo - est un récit de batailles, de la grande victoire la chute définitive. Le climat musical est dominé par un esprit de conquête. Les rythmes soutenus de la caisse-claire symbolisent la chevauchée infernale de la cavalerie impériale. Nous suivons l’itinéraire militaire de l’un des hommes les plus célèbres et les plus controversés de l’histoire de France.

Wind parts use only five pitches and only the percussion parts use eighth notes. Two sound effects are required in the piece. First, the hatching eggs are portrayed by a ratchet, and second, the snapping dinosaurs jaws are represented by  a slapstick. Ballet of the Dinosaur Hatchlings is an intriguing piece that beginning students are sure to love.
Ballet of the Dinosaur Hatchlings is a descriptive novelty selection for a beginning band with less than one year of instruction. Wind parts use only five pitches. Ye Olde English Hunt comes to life through this colorful and humorous musical portrait. The opening pastoral scene is augmented with bird whistles, duck calls, and whatever wildlife your percussion section can conjure up. A series of trumpet calls, followed by a chorus of A Hunting We Will Go leads us into the frenzy of the hunt, complete with barking dogs and the galloping of horse hooves. Bolero was originally written as a ballet for a famous ballerina and achieved great success on the stage. Nowadays the ballet itself is only rarely performed and even though Ravel thought the orchestra would seldom play it, it has become one of the best-loved pieces for the concert stage. This arrangement by Philip Sparke keeps very close to the original score in this melodically and rhythmically unique work.

Ravel schreef Bolero oorspronkelijk als ballet voor een beroemde danseres. Als zodanig was het ook bijzonder succesvol. Tegenwoordig wordt het als ballet nog zelden opgevoerd. Hoewel Ravel dacht dat het als orkestwerk nietin de smaak zou vallen, is het toch een van de geliefdste titels voor op het concertpodium geworden.
