Book 2-The two books contain some 100 songs chosen from the definitive collections of The English Lutenists begun by Edmund Fellowes revised by Thurston Dart and added to by later scholars. They include many favourites and many lesser-known songs by popular composers such as Dowland Campion and Pilkington (no known ancestor of the compiler) as well as some unjustly forgotten such as Corkine Attey and Ferrabosco. Nearly all are for middle-range voice with lute parts transcribed in staff notation. The books have an appropriate preface and a commentary on the words which often throw a penetrating light on Elizabethan and Jacobean life.

Yung-Yang is a song for medium Voice with Piano accompaniment. It is based on a ninth century Chinese text which was translated into English in 1916 by Launcelot Cranmer-Byng and set to music in 1919.Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer conductor and educator. He channelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects championing the works of Jean Sibelius founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by his contemporaries as out-of-date his music is now being appreciated as one of the last great contributions from theEnglish Romantic movement.

Edward German was an English musician and composer of Welsh descent best remembered for his extensive output of incidental music for the stage and as a successor to Arthur Sullivan in the field of English comic opera. While French influences are clearly apparent in his music overall German was a ‘stylistic cosmopolitan who wrote music that is quintessentially English’ (David Russell Hulme). While some of his music became outdated with new styles taking the limelight in the 20s and 30s his songs were still widely performed and recorded in the 50s including Charming Chloe. Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. He has however only acquired this status many years after his death. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude. Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises125 songs. Half of them were composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918 when the composer was in his early twenties.With this publication in three volumes Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been published. The songs are set to German Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for performance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English. The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000 the aim being to present practical performance-oriented publications of Langgaard's works on a critical scholarly basis.

William Whittaker (1876-1944) was an English conductor composer and academic who produced many choral arrangements of English folk songs. Blow The Wind Southerly originated in his nativeNorthumberland and tells the story of a woman hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover a sailor back home to her. This arrangement is for Voice with Piano accompaniment.

Pour Soprano Et Orchestre (Piano Reduction)-Gabriel Fauré's Chanson De Mélisande for Soprano and Orchestra. Reduction for Voice and Piano.   “An enchanted dream” – poet Charles Van Leberghe’s words give us an idea of the audience’s enthusiasm at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Piccadilly on June 21st 1898 when the first English language performance of Symbolist play Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck was performed with incidental music by Gabriel Fauré.    The composer had tasked his favourite student Charles Koechlin with orchestratingthe score. The London theatre’s small number of musicians suited the apprentice musician’s ideals of clarity and transparency. It was 1936 before Koechlin returned to La Chanson de Mélisande this time to create a version with orchestra published the following year as a Piano-Vocal score. Using autograph manuscripts Roger Nichols and Otfrid Nies have created a new edition of the Piano-Vocal reduction that includes the text of the melody in English French and German. The score contains the 1898 and 1936 variations as well as an informative preface by Otfrid Nies.
