Par MINDY PAUL / SAMMUT ERIC. Métissages est né d'une rencontre artistique entre Paul Mindy et Eric Sammut. C'est tout naturellement que ces deux musiciens, par ailleurs passionnés de pédagogie, ont voulu créer une passerelle entre les classes de percussions traditionnelles et classiques. Les pièces présentées dans ce recueil sont de styles variés, offrant un large éventail de musiques : classique, traditionnelle, originale. Elles revêtent toutes un indéniable intérêt pédagogique, tant d'un point de vue technique que de l'interprétation et de la connaissance des styles. Percussionniste et chanteur, Paul Mindy, professeur au CNR d'Aubervilliers-la-Courneuve, est spécialiste des musiques du Brésil. Il anime des masterclasses dans le monde entier. Il reçoit le prix Georges Brassens et se produit en tant que chanteur à l'Olympia. Il reçoit également en 2001 le prix de l'Assemblée Nationale et en 2002 le prix de l'Académie Charles Cros. Son talent de percussionniste lui a permis de jouer avec de grands musiciens : Richard Galliano, Roland Dyens, Carlo Rizzo, Franck Tortillier, Dave Samuel, Baden Powell... Il joue aussi avec le groupe 'Quai #5', l'Orchestre pour la paix, Flavio Esposito. Sa discographie comprend des enregistrements en solo (Le monde à l'envers, Mosaïque), en trio avec J.C. Hoarau et A. Vérité (Notre Brésil), et avec la chanteuse Fabienne Magnant (Canto instrumental), un DVD 'méthode pour percussion africaine, brésilienne et cubaine' (site internet www.drumvision.fr.st). Paul Mindy est aussi l'auteur de livres-CD à succès aux éditions Didier Jeunesse : A l'ombre de l'olivier, Comptines du Baobab, Papagaio, Comptines créoles... En 2006, il participe au festival Percpan à Salvador de Bahia. Eric Sammut a débuté ses études musicales par l'apprentissage du piano, puis a suivi la classe de percussion de Michel Ventula au CNR de Toulouse. En 1989, l'année même où il obtient un premier prix à l'unanimité dans la classe de François Dupin et Georges van Gucht au CNSM de Lyon, Eric Sammut entre comme premier percussionniste à l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon. Puis en 1995, le premier prix international de marimba de New York lui est décerné - il effectue alors une tournée de récitals et de masterclasses aux Etats-Unis, mais aussi en Europe et au Japon. Il enseigne le marimba au CNR de Toulouse depuis 1997, au CNR de Paris, ainsi qu'à la Royal Academy of London, et il est soliste à l'Orchestre de Paris. Après avoir participé à de nombreux enregistrements discographiques et vidéos avec l'Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, l'Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, l'Orchestre National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de Paris, il réalise en 2005 un album de marimba solo, 'Four-Mallet Ballet'. Un enregistrement pour un nouveau CD est prévu en 2006, avec les musiciens Philippe Berrod, Eric Echampard et David Patrois. Percu. trad. : rythme de la bossa-nova - jouer piano la technique de chaque instrument constituera une initiation à la batucada, concert de percussions traditionnelles brésiliennes carnavalesques. Antonio Carlos Jobim a dit un jour que la première bossa avait été composée par Chopin avec ce prélude. Guantanamera Percu. classique : le marimba doit être interprété librement, presque en dehors rythmiquement - le vibra très coloré et aérien - le marimba basse toujours en osmose avec les percussions traditionnelles. Percu. trad. : intéressant pour se familiariser avec le rythme de la salsa cubaine, techniques de base des congas, maracas, cloche, guiro et claves. Maracatu de la Saint Valentin Percu. classique : début et milieu de la pièce doivent être interprétés dans un esprit festif - la fin nécessite une grande souplesse ainsi qu'une écoute attentive du triangle. Percu. trad. : rythme très important de la région de Récife. Bien écouter le CD pour les doubles croches. Programme Note In REJANG for solo percussion I have linked elements from the music of the Far East to a more Western way of thinking. The title can be understood partly as a description of the instruments played yielding local associations and partly as having an undefined ritual flavour inasmuch asit contains a particular idea. To the almost aggressive character of this work I have added a sound from nature conveyed by a set of genuine Balinese Wind Mills (surely used here for the first time in a Western work) which endow the work with a more conciliatory transition between two areas which however remain what they are: tendencies pushing in opposite directions. The work is divided into five movements according to considerations of timbre. Some kind of order or limitation if you like had to be imposed on the almost chaotic events and ideas which lie behind at least some parts of REJANG.   Ole Buck

Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra - Percussion duo parts only.What determines the special character of a piece of music written for percussion instruments is the very choice of sets of instruments. In Udacrep Akubrad I have chosen a similar set of instruments for each of the players: a marimba two Darbuka and a tom-tom. This piece draws its inspiration from the ?Eastern? music extending the boundaries of the region as far as the Indian sub-continent. The main source materials in this piece are scales and the rhythms emanating from the traditional classical music of the peoples of the Mediterranean; and repetitive minimalism fromthe music tradition of the Middle East as well as the recently developed techniques in western music. ? Score of Rolf Wallin's Stonewave for solo Percussion. Composer's Notes:The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called 'fractals'. These formulas used inthe fast growing field of 'Chaos theory' are relatively simple but they generate fascinating and surprisingly 'organic' patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen or played as music. One should think that such amathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of 'Stonewave' however is not one you would associate with math books. The steady insistent pulse and the use of sequences put squarely upagainst each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name ofLiberalism making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa.'Stonewave' is therefore an incantation as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaimsthe Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. POD-Nico Muhly's Pulses Cycles Clouds for large mixed Percussion ensemble was written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. At its core it is a group of four marimbas surrounded by various bells and other mallet instruments; unpitched instruments here are primarily played by an ensemble of amateur percussionists. The piece obsesses over a cycle of eleven chords introduced slowly through the beginning of the piece. Each chord is announced by a large vertical moment with bells vibraphone and a sudden shift in tonality. The four marimbas then relax into a series of soft interlockingpatterns over which an ensemble of glockenspiels and crotales plays a simple rhythm in a complex relationship to the other instruments. Eventually the pulse disintegrates entirely into a vision of a night sky; insects unexpected interruptions - a walk around a quiet landscape. Eventually the pulse returns but nocturnally subdued. The piece is meant to echo in its way the thrill of community music making the joy of sharing a pulse and the various connections both rhythmic and interpersonal I made at BUTI two decades ago. - Nico Muhly
