The Trauer-Actus is probably the earliest work in the Grimma collection of Telemann cantatas. Its textual and musical structur indicates that this work dates from Telemann's apprentice years at Hildesheim, between about 1696/97 and 1701. It belongs to a category of cantatas in which biblical quotations are brought together to etablish a particular theme, which can be supportet by existing hymns (se also Bach's Actus tragicus). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3913400.

This three-movement solo cantata can be performed in several ways. The instruments basically required are the trio sonata ensemble of recorder, oboe and keyboard instrument (+ a continuo melody instrument ad lib.). If necessary, as Telemann stated, the two woodwind parts can be placed by violins. The instrumental parts can also be augmented by a body of strings, playing in the ritornello sections of the two arias. Moreover, the new edition expands the performance possibilities for the work by adding a four-part chorus from the more fully scored original version, which Telemann did not publish. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912000.

Telemann's Missa brevis on the chorale for Pentecost Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott is one of his eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motet-like composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. Score available separately - see item CA.3909900.

Telemann's Missa brevis on the Christmas hymn Ein Kindelein so lobelich is one of eleven surviving Latin Missae breves based on church hymns. The motetlike composition calls for a mixed choir accompanied by a basso continuo, reinforced by colla-parte instruments. However, the mass can also be performed solely with an organ accompaniment. Gottlob Harrer, the successor to Johann Sebastian Bach as Thomaskantor, performed the mass in Leipzig at Christmas in 1750 and 1751 with an instrumental accompaniment and for this purpose he added two horns. They are included in the present edition as ad libitum parts. Score available separately - see item CA.3909700.

With the final verse of the Book of Daniel from the Old Testament and a related cantata text, Telemann mourns the death of a prominent, but until now unknown dignitary in a cantata marked by great intimacy and with exquisite instrumentation. Jakob Ditmar, the Kantor of the Nikolaikirche in Berlin, to whom we owe the survival of this work, contributed two beautiful chorale settings for a performance in 1757. First critical edition of this cantata. Score available separately - see item CA.3913900.

The cantata Nun komm der Heiden Heiland (TWV 1:1174) is taken from Telemann’s cantata cycle of 1717–18. Though festively scored for two oboes, two trumpets, kettledrums, strings and basso continuo, it will not overly strain the financial resources of today’s ensembles. The well-known chorale tune features prominantly in all choruses. Telemann gives one aria each to the three soloists (SAB). Thanks to the relatively small instrumental ensemble, the choral passages can be taken one to a part. The vocal score appears with a singing translation in English.

Adaptation by Bach: the first movement is based on a now-lost composition by Telemann, the second on the chorus Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren (BWV 28). The third movement was probably first appended after Bach's death and was originally part of a Christmas cantata by Telemann. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3500200.

Great Baroque church music full of color and powerful imagery! Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing, rejoice and praise his holy name with the trumpets and cornetts! And nature shall join in, the seas shall rage, and the whole world and the rushing waters rejoice. This is such an ideal text for Telemann: The voices rejoice and praise together with the horns, harp, and trombones; and the choir and instruments make the sea roar, the earthquake tremble and the rivers and mountains exult. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3914000.
