From my early years studying violin at the Tehran Music Conservatory, I was captivated by the sound of the kamancheh, an ancient Persian bowed instrument considered one of the ancestors to the modern violin. I was pleased when the National Endowment for the Arts awarded me a grant to write a violin concerto as it provided me with an occasion to rekindle my fascination with the kamancheh. The notion of writing a violin concerto that would incorporate the power and brilliance of a modern instrument with the delicate and lyrical character of an ancient one was simply irresistible. Moreover, the inspiration from the kamancheh also informed my use of Persian modes, melodic, and rhythmic figures. The notes of the violins open strings (G, D, A, E) also influenced many of the melodic and harmonic elements of my violin concerto. The opening tutti is mostly based on intervals of a perfect 4th and 5th. The primary material for each movement incorporates notes of two of the open strings of the violin, creating a three-note melodic motif as the basis of themes: 1 st movement: A-D-A 2nd movement: D-G-D 3rd movement: E-A-E The overall structure of the concerto is organic and cyclical, as themes are shared between the three movements. For example, the main musical idea of the third movement is a transformation of the first movements primary theme. While the movements share similar musical materials, each one is defined by distinguishing characters. The first movement is conflicted; alternating between sections of unabashed lyricism and unforgiving ferocity. The second movement is haunting, mysterious, and expressive with long melodic lines that vary continuously. It moves through different moods and characters including a reimagining of a traditional Persian wedding tune played by the orchestra (m. 98). The third movement is festive in character and features much brilliant passagework for the solo violin. At the climax of this movement, themes from the previous movements re-emerge simultaneously with greater intensity, propelling the concerto to an energetic finale. The Concerto was composed in 1994 and is dedicated to Joshua Bell. Considering his significant musical training, Langlais' compositions are created from a wealth of knowledge and understanding, Concerto for Violin being no exception. Composed in 2002, Concerto for Violin, with String Orchestra or Piano reduction accompaniment, is highly modern in composition. With a typical performance lasting about 35 minutes, the concerto is made up of three movements. The solo Violin line addresses many virtuosic techniques, including double and triple stops, articulation, complex rhythms, varying bowings and a huge range of performance directions, amongst other aspects. For all advanced violinists, seeking varied, modern repertoire, Hakim's Concerto for Violin is an essential addition to the repertoire.&rdquo. $71.10 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Violin SKU: FG.55011-770-9 Sonaatti sooloviululle - Allerheiligentag V. Composed by Jyrki Linjama. Classical, contemporary. Book. Fennica Gehrman #55011-770-9. Published by Fennica Gehrman (FG.55011-770-9). ISBN 9790550117709. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered – the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.
Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók’s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020. $19.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Violin SKU: ST.Y274 Composed by Morgan Hayes. String music. 3 minutes. Score. Stainer & Bell Ltd. #Y274. Published by Stainer & Bell Ltd. (ST.Y274). ISBN 9790220223358. 1st perf: Keisuke Okazaki, Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, Tokyo, Japan, 22 April 2008 1st UK perf: Darragh Morgan, Schott Recital Room, Bauer & Hieber, London, 5 February 2009 Though the jagged figures and phrases of Lucky's Dream by Morgan Hayes are unmistakably those of a contemporary musical expressionist, the shadow of Bach also falls on this work, inspired by the virtuosity of the young Japanese soloist Keisuke Okazaki and his playing of the E major Partita. In fact, though 'standard' contemporary techniques are widely used in the piece - left-hand pizzicato, harmonics and microtones, all deployed in edgy, unpredictable rhythms - there is also a classical shape to the structure. In this two-part form, lasting around four minutes, the first section is reflective, dwelling on single notes, phantoms as it were of pitches that are subtly deflected through slow glissandi. Then a spectral dance ensues, delivered largely on plucked strings, ethereal, disembodied, strange. The 'Lucky' in question is a character from Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot, and Lucky's Dream is a complementary work to the earlier, impassioned Lucky's Speech (2006). The two items can stand alone or may be performed consecutively. Both are to be found on the recent all-Hayes CD released on the NMC label (NMC D163), which also features the composer's 17-minute Violin Concerto as further evidence for his original approach to writing for the instrument. $5.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Arrangeur: Cho-Liang Lin. Over the wonderfully enjoyably years of conducting, there have been so many fine encounters with the Mozart Violin Concertos - mostly with very gifted players like Menuhin, Oistrakh, Stern and, more recently, Cho-Liang (Jimmy) Lin. There have, however, been instances (only a few, I'm pleased to say) when I've come, in the performances, to dread the onslaught of those cadenzas, which sound like a send up of Paganini, or belong to the wrong century with a plethora of double-stopping lasting too long, venturing into tonalities Mozart would not have recognized. After several performances with Jimmy came a request from him for suitable cadenzas that showed off the solo violin while commenting on Mozart's music he had just played. They worked, and Sony asked us to record them all and, with the welcome inclusion of Jaime Laredo, all the rest of Mozart's violin and orchestra repertoire. This led to in an invitation from Schott to have the cadenzas published, and this is the result. / Classique / Recueil / Violon

Spielend for two violins was written during the summer and early autumn of 2003 ...(+)
Spielend for two violins was written during the summer and early autumn of 2003 and is based on the idea of the two instruments not only playing the instruments but also playing in the sense of sport i.e. playing their themes off against each other and playing with the musical material. There are times for instance when they seem to be having a contest to see who can finish the themes first or who can divert the other’s attention to a new texture or rhythm. The title the German word for 'playing' also refers in a way to the composer himself exploring the themes harmonies and rhythms - particularly notable in this respect is the large central slow section which contraststwo altered reminiscences of the Violin Sonata of Poulenc (a composer whose music is very dear to me) with the gradual expansion of a fugue from two parts to eight (four in each violin). Fugue after all is in a sense an example of a composer making sport however seriously with the themes. So the work is a kind of extended musical pun lasting about fifteen minutes in all and being performed without a break. Though the central section is slow the outer ones are quick and energetic emphasizing especially the idea of activity and vigour - the ending however may catch the unwary listener by surprise. The first performance was given by Philippa Mo and Peter Sheppard Skærved in Leighton House London on 7th May 2004.'John McCabe's new 'Spielend' strikes me as a miniature masterpiece: a highly charged 15-minute piece in which the violins chase or echo each other in a thousand different ways including a fugure in which as with Bach two instruments seemed to suggest a dozen voices.' - Richard Morrison The Times 11/05/2004

Allerheiligentag V. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered ? the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.' Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók?s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violon

Edizione critica a cura di Fulvio Luciani. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. A new critical edition of Bach?s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin ? possibly the very pinnacle of the whole repertoire for violin ?, by violinist Fulvio Luciani. The edition is based on the autograph and is equipped with an apparatus of critical notes: they indicate problems with the reading of the original source, suggest possible new solutions, alternative to the widely accepted ones, and retrace the history of harmonic perception, as evidenced by the changes the composition went through across all its historical editions. The curator provides indications (clearly distinguishable from the original source) for the performance, the bowings specifically. They are suggestions founded in the observation of the technical apparatus pictured by Bach in his genius: a hand technique closer to a pianist?s than a traditional violinist?s; a mechanism we could call pioneering to this day. / Date parution : 2022-10-12/ Recueil / Violon

'You can be rightfully pleased with what is coming!' announced Clara Schumann self-confidently in late 1855 to the 24-year-old Joachim upon sending him a copy of the 'Three Romances' op. 22 for violin and piano that had just been published by Breitkopf & Härtel. There is no doubt that her acquaintance with the young virtuoso had stimulated her to write the pieces already back in 1853. The two remained linked to the Romances after publication as well: Clara Schumann and Joachim often successfully performed them in their concerts in later years. After having temporarily fallen into oblivion the Romances did not make their way more lastingly into the chamber musicrepertoire until 1983 when a reprint of the first edition was published. With the release of this new edition today's interpreters can also be 'rightfully pleased' with Clara Schumann's Opus 22.
