Something has happened at the circus... the magician has hypnotized the entire audience and the circus isn't quite right. After a strange and frightening beginning, there is a gentle, yet peculiar rain that falls. A creepy theme in the tenor saxophone (interrupted by some terrifying screams) moves into the trapeze artists theme where they seem to encounter an accident. A short funeral procession leads back into the lone sneaky saxophone before the magic box is opened. This magic slowly evolves into a return to normality and back to The Greatest Show on Earth! Experience this spine-chilling circus with Carnival of Shadows by David Marlatt. (6:00).

The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn. Fast-moving triplets start to appear and the music reaches a joyful and ecstatic conclusion. Olli Mustonen.

With the publication of his hypnotic Pater noster, Carus proudly presents Jacek Sykulski as a new composer in the Carus Contemporary series. Whilst Sykulski has achieved worldwide success as Director of the Academic Choir at the University of Poznan and the Poznan Boys' Choir, as a composer he has remained a well-guarded secret until now. In his sacred compositions he combines in music the deeply Catholic-imbued tradition of his country with his own compositional technique, characterized by a tremendous vocal sensuousness of sound and a conscious use of tonality enriched by dissonance. His Pater noster was composed in 2009 and revised in 2015 for a performance by the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin. The first section of this three-part work for eight-part choir (tenors and sopranos also split into three) begins with the invocation Pater noster homophonically in A minor. This then introduces the Gregorian liturgical melody of the Our Father canonically and aleatorically, like a contemplative congregational hymn. The middle section calls out Dein Reich komme in increasingly insistent rhythmic declamation, more demanding, with hypnotic repetitions and intensifications. In the last section, Sykulski returns to the opening harmonies, but now a semitone lower on A flat, followed by an intensification at the words sed libera nos a malo - and delivery us from evil once more; this ends unresolved in a diatonic cluster on A flat as the paradigm of our imperfect earthly existence. The eight-minute unaccompanied composition is extremely singable, impressive, and not difficult to master. The piece is suitable for use in the liturgy, as well as in concerts and competitions.

In this piece, commissioned by the WDR and premiered by the Quatuor Diotima in Witten in 2016, Johannes Boris Borowski shows that, to him, the string quartet genre is a rewarding field of experimentation despite any past history: A separate architecture emerges from the contrasting of noise and sound-oriented music, an architecture which causes either rather active or rather passive listening, depending on the music's consistency. The composer got his extra-musical inspiration from Dostoyevsky's 'The Brothers Karamasov': Its hypnotic detailed drama, the rhythmic change in narrative perspective and the interconnection of crime, development and romantic novel creates a similar audience expectation.

Starting with a slow, hypnotic rock ballad with beautiful melodic lines and then moving into a high-energy, bluesy Rock section, this piece by Bob Phillips will be a great opener or closer. Two soaring violin features appear in the second section and can be performed solo or soli. A repetitive, driving, never-stopping rock groove moves throughout this original piece and the soaring violin solo/soli part. Optimistic and powerful, Rockin' 67 Blues is sure to be a new classic. This charming and somewhat dark musical offering is a departure from this composer's usual epic style. Originally scored for fifteen players, this piece is much more intimate than the composer's thickly orchestrated grand works. Stylistically, a minimalistic compositional approach is used as the melodic content slowly unfolds over shifting ostinato patterns.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. This short piece L'Evolution de la Joie (the evolution of joy) is a hypnotically beautiful trumpet piece, well worth a place in the musical enthusiast's library.
