After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.

Het bekende koraal Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (Er is een roos ontloken) werd geschreven door de Duitse componist Michael Praetorius (1571-1621). Roland Kernen heeft op basis van dit koraal verscheidene variaties geschreven,die samen het luisterrijke werk Christmas Variations vormen. Na een pakkende, fortissimo opening wordt het koraal op verschillende manieren geëxposeerd. De eerste variatie is een lichtvoetige behandeling van het koraal. Dedaaropvolgende gedragen variatie vormt hiermee een mooi contrast. Na een kort tussenspel volgt het slot, waarin het koraal nog tweemaal in volle glorie de revue passeert. Het werk sluit daarmee net zo majestueus af als het begon

Nach einer reizvollen, sehr schnellen Eröffnung wird der Choral auf verschiedene Weisen präsentiert: zuerst fröhlich, dann feierlich. Nach einem kurzen Zwischenspiel folgt der Schluss, in dem der Choral zwei Mal in all seiner Pracht Revue passiert.

It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old ‘shchedrivka’, a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourced the originalUkrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.
Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten wurde um 1641 von Georg Neumark geschrieben. Alte Gesangbücher belegen eine frühe Popularität des Liedes, das heute nicht zuletzt durch Johann Sebastian Bach, der es u. a. für einen Choral verwendete, jeder kennt. In dieser Bearbeitung erklingt der Bach-Choral zweimal: einmal alternierend mit dem Motiv aus Jan de Haans Einleitung und einmal ohne Unterbrechung in einer Besetzung, die der ursprünglichen Absicht gerecht wird: einem Trostlied.

This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringenâ??s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.
Robert van Beringen bewerkte het bekende koraal Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme uit Paulus, het eerste oratorium van Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Mendelssohn liet zich graag door de muziek van Johann Sebastian Bach inspireren.Pas vijfentwintig jaar oud zette hij het dramatische bijbelverhaal over Paulus zeer overtuigend op muziek. Robert van Beringen maakte hiervan een bekoorlijke versie voor fanfareorkest.
Robert van Beringen bearbeitete den bekannten Choral Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme aus Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys erstem Oratorium Paulus. Der erst 25-jährige Mendelssohn, der sich gerne von Johann Sebastian Bachs Musik inspirieren lie�, setzte die dramatische biblische Geschichte von Paulus sehr überzeugend in Musik um. Auch in der Fassung für Fanfareorchester von Robert van Beringen bestechend gut!

This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen’s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.
