In 1953, with timpani and trumpets a la Marseillaise, a French piece of music once again captured public attention (Eurovision Hymn) and a composer was rediscovered: the first recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum H 146 was released. The introductory fanfare not only praised God but the Sun King Louis XIV, and it opens one of the greatest works of French Baroque music. Magnificent celebration and ardent pleading, effective choruses, arias and small ensembles, plus instrumental interludes combine to create a harmonious whole, drawing its higher meaning from Charpentier's musical-theological interpretation of the Latin hymn of praise that it is based on. Score available separately - see item CA.2103200.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier not only originated the Eurovision Melody, rather he also made an important contribution to French sacred music from the baroque with his oratorios, motets and cantatas. The four cantatas for the season of Christmas (CV 21.019-21.022) are now published in first editions. The Latin texts of these works for Christmas, the New Year, Epiphany, and the Purification are based on the accounts of the Gospels, which are paraphrased in the form of poetic texts. As in Charpentier's extensive Histoires sacrees, the musical structure is oratorical, with a part for the evangelist and texts spoken directly by biblical personages and groups of people (angels, Herodes, shepherds, wise men). In each work the vocal scoring includes two sopranos and a bass (those passages where a number of voices sing together can be performed either by soloists or by a choir). With this uniform scoring it would be meaningful to perform these works as a cycle, in the manner of a small Christmas oratorio. Score available separately - see item CA.2102000.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Christmas mass, the Messe de Minuit, is throughly in the French tradition, celebrating the joyful news of the Birth of Christ with cheerful happiness. In this midnight mass, composed in 1694, ten traditional French Christmas hymns have been rearranged, lending the work a dance-like energy alongside charming tone coloring. In independent movements the relatively small instrumental ensemble consisting of two flutes, strings and organ plays a significant role in the musical events of this mass, alternating with various combinations of the vocal parts. Solo voices are only used together in small ensembles and, in accordance with the practices of the period, the boundaries between solo ensemble and choir are fluid, meaning that these solo passages can also be sung by members of the choir. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2102900.

Does anyone not know the Little Prince? Antoine de Saint-Exupery's story has been translated into many languages and is known all over the world. Peter Wittrich (*1959) set to music those individual figures and fairytale scenes, emotional and spiritual experiences, transforming them into an experience in sound. The Little Prince is read and loved by several generations, so my own cycle of pieces should also appeal across the generations, to all age groups. These are not primarily pieces for children, though children will enjoy them very much; this is music to suit contemporary tastes with artistic flair and educational merit, equally suitable for use in teaching and concert performance and also providing accessible and easy contemporary piano repertoire for more mature players starting or returning to the piano. -Peter Wittrich Introduction in English and German. Song titles in English, French, and German.
