The melody of this Christmas carol comes originally from a Finnish songbook of 1582, containing a collection of 74 medieval songs together with Latin texts. The version arranged by Gustav Holst became very popular in the British Isles - with a text that links it to December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents. Philip Sparke based his adaptation on Holst’s powerful arrangement and has added various musical material himself. Gustav Holst maakte er een eerste arrangment van, wat ervoor zorgde dat dit lied erg bekend werd in de Britse Eilanden. Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed.This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. This suite is based on the fairy tale The Bronze Pig by Hans Christian Andersen.This is a story about a boy who wants to be a painter and a pig made of bronze. This pig, in Florence town square, is a bronze statue with clear water pouring from its mouth. Legend has it that when an innocent child sits on its back, that the pig can run. In three movements; Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, La Via Porta Rossa and Twilight on the Arno River this work is a highly descriptive storytelling piece that will be equally enjoyed by young and old alike. Definitely one not to be snorted at!Deze suite is gebaseerd op Het bronzen varken van Hans Christian Andersen - een sprookje over een bronzen varken en een jongetje dat kunstschilder wil worden. De plaats van handeling is de Italiaanse kunststad Florence. Decompositie bestaat uit drie delen: het sprookjesachtige Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, het nostalgische, stijlvolle La Via Porta Rossa en het sfeervolle Twilight on the Arno River. Het bronzen beeld van hetwaterspuwende varken is te vinden op de hoek van La Via Porta Rossa. Het origineel is het marmeren beeld uit de Griekse Oudheid dat wordt tentoongesteld in de Galleria degli Uffizi. De componist bezocht Florence zelf, waarze werd ge nspireerd door beide beelden.Kumiko Tanaka entführt uns in ihrer Suite für Blasorchester in die Märchenwelt von Hans Christian Andersen. La storia, che ha luogo a Firenze, narra dell’incontro tra un ragazzino che sogna di diventare pittore ed un cinghiale di bronzo che prende vita quando il ragazzino, simbolo dell’innocenza, gli monta sul dorso.

Stufen, een compositie voor sopraan en harmonieorkest, is gebaseerd op een filosofisch gedicht van de Duits-Zwitserse dichter en schrijver Hermann Hesse (1877-1962). In dit gedicht staan de levensfasen van de mens centraal.Jacob de Haan heeft zich voor Stufen onder meer laten inspireren door de laatromantische muziek van componisten als Richard Wagner en Richard Strauss. So beginnt ein Gedicht mit dem Titel Stufen von Hermann Hesse über Aufbruch und Abschied, Geburt, neue Lebensabschnitte und Tod, das Jacob de Haan sich zum Thema dieses Blasorchesterwerks nahm. Ebenso ungewöhnlich und interessant wie das Thema ist auch die Besetzung der Solostimme. La trame musicale de Jacob de Haan porte la marque de la musique post-romantique de Richard Wagner et Richard Strauss.Stufen est placé sous le signe d’un adieu qui fait la part belle la mélancolie - motif premier qui détermine l’essentiel du climat musical. Le passage instrumental final se développe comme un contrepoids la tristesse. This tour de force piece perfectly displays Karrick's polished compositional craft with impeccable scoring, beautiful melodic writing, and exceptional orchestrational color.While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .
