Eleven Sonatas for Flute (Treble Recorder) and Basso Continuo (Piano). This new Urtext edition draws on all available sources incorporating the revised version of the Halle Handel Edition to produce a definitive reading for the new millennium.

This edition of Handel's Complete Flute Sonatas collects together the two sonatas which Handel intended for the Flute as well as another three from the Opus One group. This edition has been edited by David Lasocki with the Basso Continuo realisation by Peter Holman.

In Sonata 7 in D major Balicourt opens with a suave intricately rhythmic Adagio. The following Presto with its delightful interplay between flute and bass including both octave doubling and stretto imitation is the most skittish movement to emerge from the composer’s pen. The finale is a ‘sandwich’ movement in which a Minuetto encloses a duple-metre Cantabile in D minor. Although the minuet could be said to exemplify one of those ‘easy’ movements referred to in Balicourt’s prospectus for subscribers its complex prescribed ornamentation requires sensitive handling. Sonata 8 in E minor is strategically placed as the final work inthe set being one of the longest as well as the most conservative; adopting the traditional four-movement configuration it continually harks back to the grand Handelian style. An eloquent Andante ushers in a Presto containing many slightly academic contrapuntal touches and much chromaticism. The subsequent Largo is only five bars long: its plain melodic line in minims and crotchets is the skeleton around which the flautist is expected to weave an elaborate embroidery. For the finale Balicourt introduces in effect a new version in triple metre of the second movement. The fact that all four movements are in E minor heightens the sense of unity which is expressed very concretely through their sharing of some thematic material.

The Flute sonata in G minor BWV 1020 one of the gems of 18th century Flute literature has been passed down to us over the years as a work of Johann Sebastian Bach but its authenticity is disputed. Recent research suggests that the composition most probably came from the pen of Bach’s oldest son Carl Philipp Emanuel. This new edition is an extract from the Bärenreiter edition BA 5220 which also includes the two Flute sonatas BWV 1033 in C major and BWV 1031 in E-flat major which are of similarly doubtful authenticity. The sonata in G minor has been edited by the renowned Bachscholar Alfred Dürr using the editorial guidelines of the New Bach Edition as a basis and it appears now for the first time as a separate performing edition.

This volume which marks the 300th anniversary of the king?s birth contains the first edition of four sonatas for solo Flute and Basso Continuo composed by Frederick II known as ?the Great? (1712?1786) King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.
