The last of the three?Solfege Des Solfeges books this is an excellent set of exercises tailored towards the Solfege method of sight-singing and remains a popular method for teaching aural musicianship to beginner singers. First published in 1891 this edition has been translated into English by J.H. Cornell. Adolphe-Leopold Danhauser (1835-1896) was a French musician composer and pedagogue. His name was often Germanised to Dannhäuser. Having been appointed as Professor of Solfeggio at the Paris Conservatory he is best known for his pedagogical works such as the 1878 text book Théorie de la Musique but also composedseveral operas and other choral pieces.

Janet Vogt is an American Pianist professor at the College-Conservatory of Music. She also composed pieces for Keyboards for Choirs and some pop music. Leon Bates (born 1949) is a renowned American Pianist who performed with the New York Symphony the Cleveland Symphony and many others. He is also a professor and participated to the conception of this method. Stéphane Blet is an international Solo Pianist who decided to focus on the composition of pieces and on teaching. He is currently professor in the École Normale de Musique “Alfred Cortot”.

Stylistically this is a book about jazz improvisation both because that particular musical style is most comfortable and familiar to this author and because jazz has been the main arena of improvisation for nearly a century at least for profusion if not superiority in that craft. However the many and variegated techniques developed by great jazz improvisers during the last century and presented here would be of considerable even equal use to persons engaged in other styles of improvisation such as rock blue grass dixieland commercial dance or church music. Perhaps someday there will be specific improvisation methods for these styles but for the present jazz music leads all other styles in the development of methods for learning to improvise.

Hilarion Eslava (1807-1878) was a Spanish priest musician and pedagogue. Although he was a prolific and well-known composer in his own time today he is primarily remembered for his 1846 work Metodo De Solfeo a successful Solfège Method which has been in constant use all over the world for more than 150 years. Having been a choirboy at Pamplona the method was published while Eslava was choirmaster at the Royal Chapel in Madrid and he undoubtedly used it as he was training the choristers there.
