Bartók probably first played pieces by Domenico Scarlatti in public in 1911. During the next two decades he featured them in his piano recitals more than 60 times. His dedication to Italian and French Baroque music is also illustrated by the fact that, in 1920, he signed a contract with the Budapest publisher Rozsnyai to edit seven volumes of Baroque keyboard music. His plan was to select compositions by Couperin and Rameau in addition to pieces by Scarlatti, but during the 1920s it ended up being only two volumes of Couperin and another two comprising ten compositions by Scarlatti. In editing these masterpieces, Bartók's aim was primarily to counterbalance or evenovershadow the works by the Mendelssohn-Schumann epigones used in primary and secondary music education. The present, single-volume collection comprises Bartók's two Scarlatti volumes, complete with an editorial preface, his detailed performing instructions, and his commentary. The editor recommends these compositions for pianists with at least five years' experience, and gives practical recommendations for the grouping of individual items to form charming sonatina-like sets of pieces.

In his Sonata, Peter Wolf puts his style well-known from the character pieces of his previous piano series (Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, Jazz preludes) in the service of a demanding form. We can recognize the style that can be traced back to jazz and Bartok, the characters that tap like a toccata or swirl like perpetual motion, the singing lyrical melodies or even such playful turns as the baroque musette-like episode of the slow movement. Like Wolf's previous piano works, this multi-faceted composition, which sets high standards in terms of instrumental technique, was inspired by the outstanding pianist Jozsef Balog and gives the impression of his individuality as a performer.

We begin with an invitation to discover a work: Sigrid Naumann offers improvisational preliminary exercises that pave the way to the various pieces and are helpful for learning it. The stylistic palette is extraordinarily varied here. The pieces encompass all epochs from Baroque to classical modernity (Bartok, Kabalevsky, Kurtag, B. Heller); in addition, there are also traditionals and pieces from presentday piano pedagogy. Afterwards we distance ourselves again, for the second invitation goes out to the thematically grouped pieces that open up a variety of possibilities for free formative shaping. The new Spielregeln - Spielraume have proven themselves in practice and are supplied with insightful comments.Exploring the Rules and the Rooms of the Game Spielregeln - Spielraume (Rules of the Game - Rooms of the Game) is a dual invitation for free music-making at the piano.
