Erkki Melartin's six-movement Per speculum in enigmatae suite op. 93 for piano is published for the first time. The Latin title of the suite means Through a glass, darkly. Melartin probably compiled it from non-related pieces composed at different times. The biblical heading maybe has a spiritual rather than a religious connotation, though some of the movements - and the title - are programmatic. The first movement, Katedralen (The Cathedral), was possibly inspired by the architecture of Bruges (Brugge). The second movement, Die andere Seite (The Other Side) has expressionistic features, and possibly reflects the influence of Scriabin. In the third movement, Dunkle Traume (Dark Dreams), the chorale-like motifs in the left hand strive upwards, but always fall back again. Movement four, Schwester Namenlos (Sister Nameless is a short cameo in 5/4 time. Erinnerung is a Late-Romantic mood piece with unconventional phrasings. Melartin later expanded the early version of late 1913 with the closing Weihnachtsglocken (Christmas Bells).

Einari Marvia (1915-1997) was a Finnish composer, music publisher and musicologist. He studied composition with Erkki Melartin, Leevi Madetoja and Selim Palmgren. His style is harmonically rich and original. The influence of Brahms is particularly apparent in the keyboard idiom, which is quite dense at times and very demanding for the left hand. The legacy of European late Romanticism is also present in the rapidly shifting harmonies. The sonority of the texture, meanwhile, owes something to the Russian piano school. Piano Sonata Op. 16 (1945) is published now for the first time - and directly as an Urtext edition. Pianist DMus Risto-Matti Marin has delved into the deep end of the manuscript world; as a result of the research, a notable piano work now gets an edition it deserves.

Ilmari Hannikainen (1892-1955) was the most important Finnish pianist during the first decades of the 1900s. In his lifetime he also was one of the country's most famous composers. Hannikainen studied composition with Erkki Melartin, Franz Schreker and Maximilian Steinberg. His piano techers include Elli Rangman-Bjorlin and Alexander Siloti. Piano Sonata C minor Op. 1 was completed in 1912, and is one of the largest-scale romantic piano compositions in the Finnish piano repertoire. The work is a joyride of flowing national romanticsm filled with youthful energy. Some technical influence from Chopin and Liszt is evident, as is from master Sibelius, the major figure in Finnish music at the time. The Piano Sonata is published now for the first time - and directly as an Urtext edition. Pianist Dmus Risto-Matti Marin and music engraver Jani Kyllonen have studied all surviving manuscript sources, resulting in a worthy edition of this great work for piano.
