Composed at various times of the composer's life, Lirica Catalana op. 14 [Catalan Lyric] is an anthology of Catalan texts from various authors and reviews of popular songs. This is the same process Comellas followed in Lirica Castellana and Lirica Inglesa. The songs of these groups do not have a musical connection, but more a linguistic connection. The melodic flow in the different groups, shows how the text and the language used, produced a concrete response Comellas' harmonic vocabulary.The highlight of this group is the Cant de la Sibil·la [Song of the Sybil·la], a liturgical drama and Gregorian chant, whose lyrics recounts a prophecy of the Apocalypse and was originally interpreted in Latin. From the thirteenth century there are versions in Catalan. These earlier versions Judici Signum weren't direct translations from Latin, but came from previous adaptations Old Provencal and Old Catalan, which gives us the idea of the enormous popularity of this song must have had in the past. Paganini's Capricci served as inspiration for many composers. In addition to Brahms, Schumann and Liszt, Rachmaninoff was also inspired by the idea. His Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini has since become one of his best known and most popular works and was an immediate success. Throughout his life, Liszt's imagination was almost obsessed with notions of death and mourning. He composed many works on these topics, such as Pensée des morts, Funérailles, the two versions of La lugubre gondola, and Totentanz (Dance of Death), based on the Gregorian Dies irae sequence depicting the horrors of the Last Judgement. The latter project matured over a period of several decades, beginning in 1830, when Liszt heard the premiere of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, whose finale includes the Dies irae theme. Along with this musical impression, Liszt was stirred by horrifying visual representations of the dance of death by Holbein and Buffalmacco. Totentanz, composed asa series of variations, was finally completed during Liszt's Weimar period as one of its most outstanding compositions. They pile up seemingly disconnected sounds, and if this happens to arouse their musical instinct they look consciously for some of the harmonies found by chance and keep repeating them. Thus this series does not provide a tutor, nor does it simply stand as a collection of pieces. It is a possibility for experimenting and not for learning to play the piano.Pleasure in playing, the joy of movement - daring and if need be fast movement over the entire keyboard right from the firstlessons instead of clumsy groping for keys and the counting of rhythms - all these rather vague ideas lay at the outset of the creation of this collection. Playing - is just playing. It requires a great deal of freedom and initiative from the performer. On no account should the written image be taken seriously but the written image must be taken extremely seriously as regards the musical process, the quality of sound and silence. We should trust the picture of the printed notes and let is exert its influence upon us. The graphic picture conveys an idea about the arrangement in time of even the most free pieces. In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem.
