This volume presents easy pieces for piano by great virtuosos. It unites the two greatest, and perhaps best-known, pianists of the 19th century, Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt. The technical requirements of these works are very moderate without muting the stylistic characteristics of these two composers. The ability to play an original composition by Liszt in the first years of lessons can be very motivating for the piano student. Also featured in this collection are works by the virtuoso Ferdinand Hiller, to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his Piano Concerto. As in many of the works by Liszt and Chopin, Hiller's works are frequently reminiscent of folk music. The complete set of Magyar dallok / Ungarische National-Melodien [Hungarian songs] consisting of 11 items is published here for the first time in a scholarly edition. The composer began to write them resulting from his first return visit to Pest in 1839. The music of these pieces was partly re-used by Liszt at the beginning of the 1850s in his deservedly popular 15 Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Carnival at Pest was inspired by his second tour of Hungary in 1846- it was later re-worked as the 9th Hungarian Rhapsody. The present volume also contains the so far unknown very first version of the 1st Hungarian Rhapsody, and in addition two large fragments from the 1840s plus a number of album leaves. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. Piano Sonata in b minor-Following the revision of Henle's facsimile of the Piano Sonata In B Minor (HN 3227) in 2015 they are now proud to present the corresponding new Henle Urtext edition. With the helpof the splendid facsimile reproduction Henle were able to analyse several passages in the autograph more reliably; in addition the editor Ernst Herttrich not only consulted the first edition but also a copy of a studentof Liszt’s in which the composer had made entries in his own hand. Clara Schumann reacted with a lack of understanding when Liszt sent the sonata: “It is only blind noise –not a single healthy thought everything confused.” Today we view this differently. Henle's new edition of this key Piano work is further enhanced by the sophisticated fingerings supplied by the Piano titanMarc-André Hamelin.

Fantasy On A Theme Of Liszt was written in 1967 for a Cheltenham Festival concert. The theme which lies behind the work is the opening tune of Liszt's Faust Symphony though this is never heard in its original form but is rather used as a thematic reservoir from which the music is derived. It is dedicated to the American composer and conductor Bernard Herrmann. John McCabe (1939-2015) was a British composer pianist and music administrator. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM) and built a career as a virtuoso pianist. However he also wrote several hundred musical compositions ranging from large-scaleorchestral works to chamber music and solo instrumental pieces - it is said the only classical genre he did not write for was opera.
