The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments, wether in architecture, painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts, all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass, the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. For faithful Catholics it is the great mystery, and for those who are not Christian believers it is incomprehensible, possibly even off-putting - the mystery of the Eucharist. As far back as the late medieval period, the verse prayer Ave verum inimitably captures the special atmosphere of the contradiction between a terrible death and the redemption of mankind. Matsushita sets an early version of this prayer for the Eucharist in motet-like ABA form. A floating melody, alternating precisely between major and minor and first sung solo by all four voices in transposition, introduces the piece in a contemplative style. The scale is then altered in the counterpoint to a pure Dorian mode, contrasting in the middle section at the text vere passum, where Matsushita accompanies the increasingly wide-ranging melody and its chromatic, augmented intervals, by increasingly dissonant chordal shifts like a fauxbourdon. From this the tonal high point develops into an almost perfect F major, which then finally picks up on the opening motif for the added lines of text O Jesu dulcis, o Jesu pie... before ebbing away in F major. This legacy is analysed and placed in context within the various national styles current in Europe, and the enormous influence of his treatise The Art of Playing on the Violin is positioned in a continuum which extends to Ivan Galamian.Outside music these studies examine the effect of Freemasonry on Geminiani's career, and his frequent recourse to law to defend his rights. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers' dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally. Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR WOOD QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continuous eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts, and following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.
