Aanvankelijk was Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) een Russische marineofficier, maar de successen die hij als componist behaalde, waren voor hem aanleiding om zich geheel te wijden aan het componeren. Hij is met name bekend vanwegeorkestwerken als Capriccio Espagnol en Sheherazade. Zijn vijftien opera’s worden minder vaak uitgevoerd. ‘Song of India’ komt uit de sprookjesachtige opera Sadko. In het lied zingt een koopman over zijn vaderland.Het is alom bekend geworden, getuige de vele uitvoeringen en bewerkingen. Deze versie voor harmonieorkest is van de hand van Wil van der Beek.Song of India, oder auch Song of the Indian Guest ist im Deutschen bekannt als das Hindu-Lied aus Rimski-Korskakows Oper Sadko von 1897. Das Hindu-Lied ist eines der berühmtesten Stücke von Rimski-Korsakow, die, wie der Hummelflug aus dem Märchen vom Zaren Saltan, auch außerhalb ihres Opernkontexts berühmt wurden. Dank Wil van der Beeks Bearbeitung ist die beliebte Arie nun auch Blasorchestern zugänglich.Nikola Rimski-Korsakov occupe une place de choix dans la musique symphonique russe de la fin du XIXe siècle. Parmi ses opéras d'une exceptionnelle richesse musicale, on citera Sadko, créé en 1898. Cet opéra-byline en sept tableaux est basé sur Sadko, le riche négociant, Conte du Roi des mers et de la sage Vassilissa, et d'anciennes ballades russes.
