Bachâ??s appointment as the Cantor at Leipzigâ??s Thomaskirche in 1723 required him to produce a new cantata for every Sunday service. Jesu, Joy of Manâ??s Desiring is taken from his Cantata No.147 and is unusually elaborate, treated more like an aria than a chorale. It is perhaps the best-loved cantata movement from Bachâ??s entire output and is a certain crowd pleaser for your concert programme. After the introduction, in which the landscape of Groningen with its beautiful wide views is presented, follows five variations based on the 13th-century Gregorian theme Dies Irae that is attributed to Thomas van Celano. Each variation can be seen as a stage or a scene in the rich history of the village of Grijpskerk, making this work a very exciting and expressive piece of music for a contest or a concert. Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.

If you need a beautiful slow interlude for any concert then this is the piece for you. This short work by Italian composer Thomaso Albinoni has a luscious melody that will bring tears to any eyes. For hundreds of years the manuscript of this work had been lost and was only discovered in 1945. Despite this it has become Albinoni’s best known work and has topped the classical charts on many occasions. Wonderful figures for the flugel and soprano cornet bring out extra emotion in this arrangement by Jacob de Haan.Das Adagio, so wie es heute weithin bekannt ist, hat eine interessante Geschichte: Es wurde erst im 20. Jahrhundert von einem Musikwissenschaftler aus einem Manuskript Albinonis, welches lediglich Teile einer Melodie enthielt, rekonstruiert. Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) est né Venise. Il est le fils aîné d’un riche marchand. Dès son plus jeune ge, il développe un réel talent pour le chant et surtout pour le violon, et se met rapidement composer. Albinoni a vécu et travaillé toute sa vie durant Venise, mais a également séjourné Florence et Munich.Dans sa jeunesse, Albinoni compose de la musique sacrée mais sans grand succès. En 1694, il attire l’attention du public vénitien lors de la représentation de son premier opéra Zenobia, Regina de Palmireni (Zenobia, reine de Palmireni). Ses premières œuvres de musique instrumentale datent de la même année. Par la suite, Albinoni se consacre surtout lacomposition d’œuvres vocales (opéras et cantates) et instrumentales (sonates et concertos).C’est en travaillant sur la biographie d’Albinoni, au sortir de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, que le musicologue milanais, Remo Giazotto, découvre la Bibliothèque Nationale de Dresde, un manuscrit inédit, sur lequel est basé le célèbre Adagio. Il semblerait que les six mesures de la mélodie et la ligne de basse retrouvées aient constitué un passage d’un mouvement lent d’une sonate trois. Vers 1945, en partant de ces éléments, Remo Giazotto reconstitue une œuvre, célèbre de nos jours, comme l’Adagio d’Albinoni, alors qu’Albinoni lui-même ne serait probablement plus en mesure de reconnaître sa pièce.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.Wir schlüpfen in die Haut von Miguel und reisen mit ihm nach Australien. Wie sollte er seine Träume vom Pazifik, seine Pacific Dreams, in diese Mixtur einbringen? Vielleicht könnte er den Wortschatz von Inseln wie Hawaii und Tahiti für seine Komposition verwenden. Und einen gemischten Chor die schönen Vokalverbindungen ad libitum singen lassen. Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf steigt er in die Metro am Circular Quay. Auf ins Hotel und frisch ans Werk! Jetzt muss er einfach komponieren....

During the second half of the 16th century, Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi composed almost entirely sacred works, however it was with his Balletti, not published until 1591 and 1594, that he gained fame and recognition. The homophonic structure and simple melodies conveyed a charming sense of naivety that became so popular during this period. Robert van Beringen has arranged Amor Vittorioso, La Sirena, L’Innamorato and L’ardito with five part flexible instrumentation.Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi schrieb in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts vorwiegend geistliche Musik, berühmt wurde er aber schon zu Lebzeiten durch seine Balletti, die er 1591 und 1594 veröffentlichte. Die Tänze waren mit ihren homophonen Strukturen und einfachen Harmonien von einer reizvollen Naivität, die so gut ankam, dass sie schon damals in zehn Auflagen im In- und Ausland gedruckt wurden.
