The Spirit of Christmas is a medley of charming Christmas carols, all with an international character. The medley consists of the following five carols: Away in a Manger - The First Noel - It Came Upon the Midnight Clear - O Come, All YeFaithful and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. A four-part choir part in English has been added which can be used ad lib. or you can also opt for singing the melody line only, for example with a soloist and/or the congregation. The arrangementis not too high pitched so that the work can also be used in combination with a children's or High School choir.

Er is ook een optionele 4-stemmige koorpartijbeschikbaar, maar ook als u enkel eenstemmig de melodie wil zingen, kan dit perfect. De moeilijkheidsgraad en omvang laat toe deze prachtige medley met een schoolkoor of kinderkoor te brengen.

The Herald Angels Sing (Écoutez, le chant des Anges). Cet arrangement peut être interprété avec un Chœur mixte quatre voix (ad lib.), mais il est également possible de fairechanter la ligne mélodique seule par un soliste (avec micro) et/ou par l'assistance. Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

The theme of this work is the history of the town of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century, a town that is now mainly associated with its nuclear plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is a metaphor for the ?work? that can be realised through ?power? in a negative way (war) and in a positive way (reconstruction). Musically speaking, power also plays an important role in this work, as opposed to vulnerability, the sense of loss and the insecurity about the lost identity. Based on the text of Lied der Franke ?Kraftwerk? is a powerfully descriptive work thatwill add energy to any concert.

De geschiedenis van Grafenrheinfeld (Beieren, Duitsland) in de twintigste eeuw vormt het thema van dit werk. Deze plaats wordt nu voornamelijk geassocieerd met zijn kerncentrale. Het Duitse woord hiervoor is Kraftwerk, datje kunt onderverdelen in de woorden Kraft (kracht) en Werk (werk). In deze compositie is het dan ook een metafoor voor het ‘werk’ dat door ‘kracht’ wordt gerealiseerd, in negatieve zin (oorlog) en in positieve zin (wederopbouw). Krachtspeelt ook in muzikaal opzicht een belangrijke rol in dit werk, geplaatst tegenover kwetsbaarheid.

Der Titel Kraftwerk steht zunächst für ein Kraftwerk im wörtlichen Sinn, beschreibt aber zugleich die Bedeutung der einzelnen Begriffe Kraft und Werk im positiven und negativen Sinn. Krieg, Zerstörung, Verzweiflung und Trauer, aber andererseits auch Frieden, Hoffnung, Wiederaufbau, Zuversicht und Sorglosigkeit sind die Bilder und Gefühle, die Jacob de Haan in seiner Komposition heraufbeschwört. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt!

Le nom de la ville de Grafenrheinfeld en Bavière est étroitement associé la centrale nucléaire qu’elle abrite. Le terme Kraftwerk est constitué des mots Kraft (la puissance, la force) et Werk (centrale, travail, oeuvre). Jacob de Haan s’appuye sur la polysémie du mot Werk pour créer deux atmosphères musicales antagonistes : la puissance d’une centrale nucléaire qui peut se révéler négative pour l’homme et la puissance d’une oeuvre ou d’un travail constructif dans un environnement positif. Une oeuvre surprenante.

La citt tedesca di Grafenrheinfeld in Baviera è strettamente legata alla centrale nucleare che essa ospita. Il termine Kraftwerk è costituito dalle parole Kraft (forza, potenza) e Werk (centrale, lavoro). Jacob de Haan si appoggia sulla polisemia della parola Werk per creare due atmosfere musicali antagoniste: la potenza di una centrale nucleare che può rivelarsi negativa per l’uomo e la potenza di un’opera o di un lavoro costruttivo in ambiente positivo. Un brano sorprendente.

At the end of the 1960s the group Creedence Clearwater Revival wrote many successful numbers, many of which were covered by various artists. Proud Mary - one of their best known songs was covered many times and this arrangement by Thijs Oud is based on Tina Turner’s performance. For the musicians this is a fantastic piece to play. Each section has a challenging, yet satisfying part. For the audience this well-known and stirring number is a smash!

Die Gruppe Creedence Clearwater Revival feierte Ende der 60er-Jahre große Erfolge. Viele ihrer Titel wurden seither von verschiedenen Künstlern gesungen. Thijs Ouds Bearbeitung von Proud Mary, eines ihrer bekanntesten Lieder, basiert auf der Version der wohl berühmtesten Interpretin: Tina Turner. Die Musiker werden dieses Stück, in welchem jedes Register einen aufregenden, herausfordernden Part spielen darf, lieben und ihre Begeisterung auf das Publikum übertragen!

La lionne la voix suave offre des prestations scéniques hallucinantes d’énergie. Tina chante, se déchaîne lors de concerts légendaires. Proud Mary compte parmi ses plus grands succès.

The source of inspiration for the composer was the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in Russia. The first movement Ostinato expresses desperation, helplessness, fear and anger. The themes from the first movement are further exposed in the second movement Fantasia which has a spectacular finale.

De inspiratiebron voor dit werk vormde de kernramp in het Russische Tsjernobyl die plaatsvond op 26 april 1986. In het eerste deel, Ostinato, worden wanhoop, machteloosheid, angst en woede uitgedrukt. Deze thematiek wordt inhet snelle tweede deel, Fantasia, verder doorontwikkeld. Contrasten was in 1986 het verplichte werk voor de derde divisie van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen. In 1989 was deze compositie het verplichte werkvoor de finaleronde van de National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

The Golden Age is een programmatische compositie in vier delen. Overtureverklankt de Gouden Eeuw, voor Nederland een periode van grote bloei. Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

The Golden Age ist eine programmatische Komposition in vier Sätzen über das so genannte “Goldene Zeitalter“ in der Geschichte der Niederlande. In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Après une guerre qui dura 80 ans, l'Espagne reconnut finalement l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies néerlandaises, qui devinrent alors l’une des plus importantes puissances maritimes et économiques du XVIIe siècle. Cette période est connue sous le nom de Siècle d’or (The Golden Age) et correspond une phase de développement exceptionnel des Pays-Bas tant sur le plan colonial et militaire que sur le plan culturel, intellectuel et artistique.

Dopo una guerra che durò 80 anni, la Spagna riconobbe l’indipendenza delle Province-Unite olandesi che divennero potenze marittime ed economiche del XVII secolo. Questo periodo è conosciuto con il nome di Secolo d’Oro (The Golden Age) e corrisponde ad una fase di sviluppo eccezionale dei Paesi Bassi sia sul piano coloniale e militare, sia sul piano culturale, intellettuale e artistico.

Aggression, despair, but also hope for peace can be clearly heard within this work. In Banja Luka Jan de Haan reflects aspects of the former Yugoslavia, stricken by a civil war which brought terrible suffering to the people of this area. Banja Luka was written for the International Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

Banja Luka is een stad in Bosnië-Herzegovina en kent een rijke geschiedenis, wat blijkt uit de vele bewaard gebleven bezienswaardigheden. Mede door zijn strategische ligging heeft Banja Luka achtereenvolgens onder Romeins, Turks en Oostenrijks bewindgestaan en ontwikkelde het zich in de loop van de eeuwen tot een belangrijk handelscentrum. De stad werd in 1969 door een aardbeving grotendeels verwoest en is daarna weer in moderne stijl opgebouwd. De naam BanjaLuka betekent bad van Lukas.Volgens het volksgeloof heeft de evangelist Lukas hier het beroep van arts uitgeoefend en geneeskrachtige bronnen ontdekt, die nog steeds in gebruik zijn.Deze compositie vertolkt de componist zijngevoelens ten aanzien van het in de jaren negentigdoor een burgeroorlog geteisterde voormalig Joegoslavië. Een agressieve inleiding stelt het conflict voor, waarna de saxofoonsectie het drama verklankt. Dit gedeelte mondt uitin een gebed, weergegeven door de trompet en de trombonesolist. Nadat hetconflict weer even de kop opsteekt, volgt een tamelijk lichtvoetig gedeelte, waarmee de hoop op vrede tot uitdrukking wordt gebracht. Dat deze hoop voorbarigis, blijkt uit het feit dat de heersers (uitgebeeld door de sopraan- en de altsaxofoon)anders beslissen. De strijdkrachten rukken vervolgens op en laten een spoor van dood en verderf achter. Het noodlot slaat bikkelhard toe: onschuldigemensen worden verkracht en vermoord en er vinden op grote schaal etnische zuiveringen plaats. Debevolking lijdt.

Aggression, Verzweiflung, aber auch Hoffnung - all das kann man in Banja Luka hören. In diesem Werk verarbeitet Jan de Haan seine Überlegungen über das ehemalige Yugoslawien, über das ein grausamer Bürgerkrieg hinwegfegte. Banja Luka wurde für das Internationale Horn Festival in Leeuwarden in den Niederlanden geschrieben.
