Par SUK JOSEF. First scholarly-critical edition The single-movement String Quartet #2 by Josef Suk (1874-1935) was written at the height of his compositional powers. Completed in Krecovice in May 1911, this demanding work, with its complex harmonies and motivic structure, seemed avant-garde for its day: the Berlin premiere of November 1912 was accompanied by protests from the audience. Now Zdenek Nouza has edited the first scholarly-critical edition of this piece. The principal source is the first edition in full score, published by Simrock in Berlin. for String Quartet op. 35a-Josef Suk played second Violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian St. Wenceslas hymn. The hymn?s message a plea for the well-being of the Czech people directed at their patron saint was immediately understood by the audience.The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914 played by the CzechPhilharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for Piano and Organ.This first Urtext edition prepared by the Sukscholar Zdenek Nouza is published in two scorings one for string quartet and another for String Orchestra (BA9584). In 1892 Josef Suk (1874-1935) a mere 18 years of age contributed his piece Melody to a collection of simple works for Violin (for two three or four Violins and for Violin with Piano accompaniment) called The Young Violinist published by the Prague-based firm Jos. R. Vilimek (several books issued per year).This short charming and technically undemanding piece for young violinists which is possibly more familiar to Czech audiences in arrangements for other combinations of instruments (Violin and Piano or solo Piano) was published once again in its original version for two Violins to mark the 70th anniversary of Suk's death(2005).The whereabouts of the autograph of this work is unknown; the editor of the new edition Zdenek Nouza based his revisions on the original carefully prepared edition from 1892. The bowings are Suk's own (he was an excellent violinist) but no fingerings have been added since the piece can be played by violinists of varying technical proficiency; first position alone would suffice however a fuller richer sound would be gained with greater mastery of the instrument.

Sonatina In G Major for Violin and Piano was written during a period of relaxed creativity and family contentment. Dvorak wrote it in America at the end of 1893 and dedicated it to his children who were both attending the National Conservatory in New York where the composer acted as director. His daughter Otylie later the wife of Josef Suk and his 10-year-old son Antonin also premiered the work at a family concert.The purpose for which it was intended is reflected in the simplicity and clarity of musical ideas and the relatively straightforward technical demands of the piece.This title is part of the first CompleteCritical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.

Bohuslav Martinu wrote his first Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932 33 this work having been commissioned by the Violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However it was never performed during the composer?s lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This Piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition.
