Einstein On The Beach the opera from which Knee Play 2 was extracted was a seminal work that broke all the rules being non-linear non-narrative episodic dreamlike and five hours long.Knee Play 2 is one of the number songs composed for scene changes simply set to Organ and using numbers and solfege syllables as text. American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of themost celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.'Glass' operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group ThePhilip Glass Ensemble.This four minute piece is the second Knee Play from Einstein On The Beach and is scored for Violin.

This work was a test piece for the International string Quartet competition in 2005 Premio Paulo Borciani It was inspired by a keyboard piece of the same name A Sad Paven for these Distracted Tymes by Thomas Tomkins(1572-1656). Tomkins had a long association with Worcester Cathedral where he was organist - appointed magister choristarum in 1596 - and lived within the precincts until shortly before his death. At the same time he wasorganist of the Chapel Royal. When the city of Worcester surrendered to Cromwell's parliamentary forces in 1646 Tomkins had to watch the hasty dismantling of his cathedral organ and the abolition of all choral services. Thesewere the 'distracted tymes' of the 'sad paven' which he wrote in enforced retirement at Worcester.

Mon deuxième quatuor à cordes, Crescent Scratches, s'inscrit dans la continuité du premier, Scratches, sans toutefois recourir au dispositif électronique qui, dans le premier quatuor, me permettait d'amplifier les timbres et de transformer le son en temps réel.Le terme de 'crescent scratch' provient des techniques de jeu développées par les DJ sur leurs platines vinyles ('scratch' ou 'scratching') que l'on retrouve dans le hip-hop et les musiques industrielles.Crescent Scratches est conçu à partir de deux principales idées : le glissando saturé (fréquemment pulsé), assimilable au 'scratch', provoqué par l'aller-retour du disque sur la platine, et la notion de boucle qui consiste à reproduire une même séquence, variée ou non. J'ai conçu des boucles et agi sur leur vitesse d'exécution, sur leur superposition en strates et leur traitement par caractéristiques de timbre. Cela finit par rendre quasiment imperceptible le retour des boucles - un phénomène qui m'a particulièrement intéressé dans cette composition. La boucle se meut en micro-élément, moteur d'une intense activité dans une macrostructure, cette macrostructure elle-même étant dès lors perçue comme une masse totalement saturée en évènements.La continuité entre ces deux quatuors se situe pour moi du côté du timbre et plus précisément dans la notation des différentes positions et pressions d'archet engendrant une large palette de sonorités saturées créant comme une aura autour du son des instruments. L'idée de 'scratch' comme onomatopée décrivant une rayure, une éraflure, une rupture ou une déchirure reste également au centre du propos de Crescent Scratches.Au-delà de l'électronique, l'endroit où se décèle la différence entre ces deux quatuors est dans la structuration de la forme et la gestion des événements. Crescent Scratches s'organise en un bloc d'une grande densité dans le traitement simultané des quatre instruments qui s'unissent là où, dans Scratches, j'articulais la forme en une succession de moments en solo, duo, trio et tutti.Yann Robin / Quatuor A Cordes

Long before writing Passalega, I harboured the idea of creating some form of organically homogeneous chain of musical tensions evolving ever more distinctly into a musical utterance, although still indeterminate in terms of pitch. The tissues forming the chain of those tensions were of relatively simple design, yet in spite of this ? or perhaps because of it ? they were incredibly well suited to generating the expressive narrative that accompanied me throughout that entire pre-composition period. After recognising the character of the musical potential in that material, I considered it to be similar to Baroque rhetoric in terms of the refined clarity and smoothness of the gestures.
