Par SAURET EMILE. Émile Sauret, violin virtuoso, teacher and composer, was admired by some of the greatest composers of his time, including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Wagner, Grieg and Mahler. He gave numerous concerts with Liszt, Rubinstein, and Moszkowski, and often played duets with Sarasate. He is predominantly remembered for the fiendishly difficult cadenza he composed to Paganini?s first violin concerto. Sauret?s 24 Etudes Caprices for solo violin are a substantial virtuoso journey through every major and minor key. Written while he was a professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, they are notable for the exceptional variety of filigree detail and variation in nuance, dynamic, fingering, bowing and phrasing, creating etudes far more substantial than is typical in this genre. Unavailable since their first publication early in the 20th century, the Etudes Caprices are edited by leading violinist and Sauret specialist, Nazrin Rashidova, who has made the first complete recording of the Etudes Caprices, performing them on Sauret?s own Stradivarius. Using the original Simrock edition as a basis, this edition supplements Sauret?s original bowings and fingerings with Rashidova?s own suggestions. Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Songes, ombres et fumées : le titre est emprunté à un vers du Sonnet 123 de Pétrarque (l'un des sonnets qui ont inspiré à Liszt trois pièces de ses Années de Pélerinage). Ces mots figurent aussi dans La Vallée Close, sur des sonnets de Pétrarque, pour voix, clarinette et trio à cordes, écrite cette même année 2016. Il s'agit avant tout d'un travail sur la 'grande forme' - une vaste trajectoire, qui passe par de nombreux territoires, revient sur ses pas, anticipe... Allusions aux formes traditionnelles : adagio central, rondo final - mais tout s'entremêle, et les différentes textures et idées musicales luttent entre elles sans cesse. Sont refusés tous les petits expédients qui permettent d'esquiver la grande question - la question posée par une forme musicale aussi chargée d'histoire que le quatuor à cordes - sont donc évités tous ces sons écrasés, divers petits bruits, gloussements d'harmoniques, qui prolifèrent dans tant de quatuors contemporains. Evitée aussi la segmentation en une succession de mouvements courts, au profit de la continuité du discours. Le thème est, comme le suggère le titre, la mélancolie - une mélancolie profonde et persistante. Une idée fixe (battements réguliers de pizzicati) jalonne la partition, s'affronte aux autres éléments musicaux, finira par triompher. The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazil Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned '24th Capriccio', transforming it into 'variations on jazz' requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the '24th Capriccio'. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various 'developmental passages' and 'transitional improvisations' while interpreting this work in concert.
