Einstein On The Beach the opera from which Knee Play 2 was extracted was a seminal work that broke all the rules being non-linear non-narrative episodic dreamlike and five hours long.Knee Play 2 is one of the number songs composed for scene changes simply set to Organ and using numbers and solfege syllables as text. American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of themost celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.'Glass' operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group ThePhilip Glass Ensemble.This four minute piece is the second Knee Play from Einstein On The Beach and is scored for Violin.

Well known for his style of bowing his splendid tone and the clearness of his execution French violinist teacher and composer Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) composed nineteen Violin concertos and forty operas during his life time and is perhaps best known for his 42 Études or Capriccios 1796. Born in Versailles Kreutzer was initially taught by his German father who was a musician in the royal chapel with later lessons from Anton Stamitz. He quickly rose to fame as a Violinist appearing as a soloist until 1810. In 1798 when at Vienna in the service of the French ambassador Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (later King ofSweden and Norway) Kreutzer the made the aquaintance of Beethoven and became the dedicatee of his Violin Sonata No. 9 Op. 47 (1803). Kreutzer however never played the work declaring it unplayable and incomprehensible. From 1795 until 1826 Kreutzer taught at the Conservatoire de Paris where he became co-author of the Conservatoire's Violin method with Pierre Rode and Pierre Baillot. He was also leader of the Paris Opera for a time. This volume contains Kreutzer's 42 Études which are to this day considered fundamental studies for student Violinists.

This edition unites all the purely instrumental and dance numbers from one of Rameau?s most popular operas, along with those from his last one-act opéra-ballet ?Io?, which was left unfinished at the time of his death. ?Platée? is the setting of a libretto by Jacques Autreau that Rameau arranged to be adapted for his own purposes, especially with regard to comic effects. In grotesque form, it shows Jupiter curing his wife Juno of her jealousy by feigning a marriage of love with the ugly swamp nymph Platée. Faced with such a ludicrous rival, Juno is forced to admit that her suspicions were unfounded. The opera was premièred in Versailles in 1745 for the wedding of the Dauphin Louis and Maria Theresia of Spain. The performance was a fiasco, however, for the coarse comedy and bizarre characters were deemed inappropriate by the wedding audience. It was not until 1749 in Paris that ?Platée? achieved its breakthrough, becoming Rameau?s greatest triumph to date. Another version with an altered text was performed from 1754 on. The plot of the fragmentary ?Io? deals with the amorous relations between the nymph Io and Jupiter in the guise of the shepherd Hylas, who becomes a rival of Apollo, disguised as Philemon. Formative influences were his encounters with Hans Werner Henze who invited him to Montepulciano in 1991 and 1992 and with Helmut Lachenmann Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös. Awards include first prize in the Hitzacker Composition Competition (1992) the Rolf Liebermann Prize and the Opera Prize from the Körber Foundation Hamburg (1993 and 1996) the Prince Pierre de Monaco Prize (1999) Composition Prize from the Salzburg EasterFestival and the Hindemith Prize from the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival (2000). In 2002 he was awarded the Hans Werner Henze Prize (Westphalian Music Prize). Pintscher first came to international attention with the opera Thomas Chatterton at the Semper Opera Dresden (1998) and later with his second opera L'espace dernier at the Opéra National de Paris (2004). He was composer-in-residence with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2002 the following seasons at the Konzerthaus Dortmund Lucerne Festival with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken at the Philharmonie Cologne and at the RSO Stuttgart . From 2010 onwards Pintscher is ?Artist-in-Association? at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since 2014 Artist-in-residence at the Danish Radio Orchestra. As a conductor Matthias Pintscher works regularly with leading orchestras and ensembles in Europe and the USA. From 2007 to 2009 he was Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and 2010 to 2011 at the New York University. He is Music Director of the Ensemble intercontemporain and since the 2013 14 season. As of September 2014 he is Professor for composition at the Juilliard School of Music New York.
