The relatively unspectacular nature of the Spaur Mass may be one of the reasons for the fact that writers on music generally refer to it only as a peripheral work, a little sister of Mozart's important church works. With regard to scoring, the Spaur Mass belongs to the category of the missa solemnis, but its brevity and its stylistic character belong far more to the missa brevis. Unlike the Organ Solo Mass KV 259, here the soloistic element - both instrumental and vocal - is clearly integrated to the background in favour of the development of the whole ensemble. Score available separately - see item CA.4062700.

Composed for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare, the composer writes: Same Train, in many arrangements seems to sing of good news coming. But – maybe it was the relentlessness, the conclusiveness of the title phrase – I wondered if what was coming might actually have been a funeral train: coming for “our sister, our mother,” and...soon enough for us, too. I thought of so many other spirituals which sing about dark truths in bright music, and wondered if I couldn't use the imitative, “ch-ch-train” ostinato to honor that willfully smiling aspect of the piece, while also freeing the harmonies to make audible the more disconsolate feelings underneath.

Richard Strauss composed his second horn concerto about 60 years after his first horn concerto, having recently considered that his actual creativity had come to an end with his opera Capriccio. The late work was just a wrist exercise and not by any means intended for publication during his lifetime, though it does not reveal the depressing circumstances of its genesis during World War II. In the key of E-flat major, with the classic three movements including a rondo finale, the concerto has is a reminiscence of its earlier sister work and seems like a nostalgic retrospect of his youth from an almost 80-year-old Strauss. Hans Pizka, editor of this work's first Urtext edition, has experienced the performance tradition and history of this concerto at first hand, both as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg, soloist of the world premiere, and also as the former solo hornist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

On 11 August 2011 it is fifty years since the death of the composer Johanna Senfter from Oppenheim who actually was a trained violinist for she had studied with renowned violinists at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt. No wonder that she dealt with the solo violin repertoire her whole life long. Concert works with orchestral accompaniment as well as chamber music works were the results of her compositional endeavours, and she attended to both the large and the small form. Apart from sonatas deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition, Johanna Senfter also wrote '5 Stucke' Op. 100 for violin with piano accompaniment. They are five miniatures which combine to form a kind of sonatina, while nevertheless being quite equal to its big sister, the sonata, as regards playing and compositional technique. A musically demanding, yet rewarding work by the Reger pupil.

The opera was greeted with exceptional enthusiasm in Paris in 1791, during the French Revolution. The Swiss freedom fighter was already a well-known character there nearly 15 years before Schillers drama. A number of arias from Gretrys opera even survived the success of Rossinis work of the same name of 1829.
