Corpus Christi is an anonymous Middle English Carol first written down c.1500. It was re-worked as a carol for Soprano and Tenor Soloists with SATB chorus by Peter Walock (1894-1930) in 1919. It wasdedicated to Thomas Strong later Bishop of Oxford who had been Dean of Christ Church College during Warlock's brief time studying there and who is better known for encouraging William Walton's musicalcareer. While he is best remembered for his scandalous lifestyle and his large-scale Capriol Suite the Corpus Christi carol ranks alongside Bethlehem Down as one ofWarlock's most sensitive and beautiful creations.

On the great feast days the Magnificat was given at the evening service in Leipzig following the sermon. Bach twice set this poem (Luke I 46-55). One of these compositions for solo soprano has been lost. Of the other Magnificat Bach composed his first version In E-flat with four inserted Christmas pieces prepared for the evening service that holiday 1723. His revision of 1728-31 In D Major omitting the Christmas movements was intended for use on any major feast day.Bach composed the motets for special occasions probably for the birthdays funerals or memorial services of prominent Leipzig citizens.In this edition five of the six motets are scored for acappella chouus: Nos. 1 2 4 and 5 for double chorus (SATB/SATB) No. 3 for various combinations of three- four- and five-part voices. Motet 6 is scored for SATB and continuo.

James Cartwright Macy (c.1845-1918) was an American songwriter and composer. Born in New York City he spent most of his life living and working in Cleveland. He wrote dozens of popular songs and pieces for the Piano as well as hymns and anthems. He also wrote under several pseudonyms meaning that a large proportion of his work could presently be unattributed to him.Little Tommy Went A-Fishing is possiblyMacy’s best-known work today. It is presented here for SATB choir with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. A version for TTBB male voice chorus is available in a separate edition.
