Commissioned by the BBC for Ashley Wass one of Radio 3's New Generation Artists and first performed at a Proms Chamber Music Concert on 31st August 2009.'The series of concert pieces (ranging from 5 to 16 minutes) that I have called Studies started with the intention of exploring either pianistic or compositional topics but has since No 7 a homage to Dukas also reflected my love of the music of various composers. Tippett?s piano music some of which I have played many times has always fascinated me for its examination of an enormous range of keyboard sonorities and technique and for its lyrical poetry and the energy and dynamism so typical of its composer. Inthis study I have combined my tribute to him (during which I refer to two of his works) with an exploration of sonata form for many years I resisted the idea of writing a Piano Sonata (note the capital letters) thinking sonata form itself was not for me but I suddenly felt I could write a single-movement work thinking of the examples of Hoddinott Scriabin and Tippett himself which would impinge closely on sonata form. Thus the opening vigorous section recurs as a kind of recapitulation to close the work and between those two parts are a slow ?movement? and then a lightly scored scherzo. The actual ending itself vanishes into the distance in a little phrase which gets quicker and quieter until it is hardly heard.'????????????????John McCabe

The ''Music Reader'' has been conceived as a kind of music magazine for junior music schools. Its aim is to provide children with a valuable music material and the collecting together of works by various composers of different epochs in one volume will make it easier for a teacher to select a repertory which would have to be assembled from different not always available collections. In addition the Music Reader as its title suggests might provide useful material for sight-reading practice. All the pieces in the Music Reader have been checked against urtext editions or the most recent critical editions. The editing in itself has also been modernized in order to make the text as transparent as possible. The editor's performance directions regarding tempo dynamics articulation and so on have been placed in brackets in order to differentiate them from the composer's marks while added slurs are pecked. In this way both teacher and student will be able to distinguish the original marks from those added by the editor which - of course - are less binding.

Par ARNALDS OLAFUR. Ólafur Arnalds is one of the best-known Icelandic musicians and composers. His compositions move between indie, neo-classical and electronic music. His work, both as a musician and as a film composer, has been critically acclaimed worldwide, earning him a BAFTA award for Best Original Score as well as Grammy and Emmy nominations. Over the course of his career, he has released five albums as well as dozens of EPs, collaborations, and various projects. Ólafur\'s live shows are often quite unorthodox for a neo-classical composer and have sold out many of the world\'s most prestigious live venues. His last album, some kind of peace (2020), earned him two Grammy nominations and reached the UK Top 40. The songbook \'some kind of peace - for piano\' contains new arrangements of the 10 songs from Ólafur\'s album of the same name as well as lavish artwork and liner notes. Around 1960 Olivier Messiaen began a large-scale concerto based on the birds of the Hérault region (?Oiseaux de l?Hérault?) for piano various soloists and orchestra. Although the project remained unfinished the solo piano part was quite developed. The Olivier Messiaen Foundation entrusted Roger Muraro a renowned interpreter of Messiaen?s piano works with organizing the sketches and manuscripts found in the composer?s archives. This new publication emerged from Muraro?s research. The study that opens the volume describes his methods in detail discussing among other issues the relationship of this work to the later Sept Haïkaï. Richly illustrated with a number of facsimiles musical examples and photographs Muraro?s introduction retraces the origins and historic context of the work invites the reader to enter the composer?s workshop and offers suggestions for performance.
