Good ballads in any style are difficult to find and this contemporary funk groove is definitely a keeper. Alto sax is showcased in the popular David Sanborn tradition and a contrasting bossa nova solo section spotlights piano or guitar.

Here is a fun chart that provides the perfect vehicle to spotlight the unsung hero of the big band - the drummer. Mindful of the traditions established by such legends as Mel Lewis, Louis Bellson, Sonny Payne, Buddy Rich, and Harold Jones, great learning material is presented for developing groups by including a variety of textures and making effective use of softer dynamics, roaring ensemble work, and saxophone soli passages. Each set includes a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson. Duration 4:50. Available in SmartMusic.

World premieres:I version for flute: Wiesbaden, 1972II version for piano: Nyon, 1972III version for var. insts.: Cologne, May 29, 1976VI version for accordeon: Fribourg, June 25, 1987VIII version for violoncello Tokyo: October 14, 1989X version for organ: Stuttgart, March 28, 2018This work (A Breath of the Untimely) was first written for solo Flute and dedicated to Aurele Nicolet. Its bears the subtitle Lament on the Loss of Musical Thought - some Madrigals for Solo Flute or Flute with any other Instruments. This serves as a playing instruction but doubles at the same time as an outmoded programme: it refers back to the musical origin of the opening lamenting motif, a tradition which was once of its time but is not of our time - namely the Lamento genre which gave the title to the Chaconne in Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas. Almost simultaneously I wrote a second version for Piano (for Piano one-and-a-half hands), which already formulates possible approaches for the performer, in some detail, to the indicated, quasi-canonic version of the piece in the programme. The multiple version Ein Hauch von Unzeit III realizes a concrete version of a formal state which floats between strict canon and aleatoric principles: each of the musicians who are spread throughout the hall introduces their own idiomatic translation of the flute part. And so the music exists, omnipresent, not only spatially throughout the hall, but also formally in a sort of fluctuating simultaneity. For that reason, it was my express wish to any potential interpreter that they should construct entirely their own version of the piece. A healthy number of musicians have responded to my suggestion - versions of the piece have now been made for guitar (Cornelius Schwehr, Gunther Schneider), accordion (Hugo Noth), double bass (Fernando Grillo), violin (Hansheinz Schneeberger), viola, violoncello, and double bass (trio basso, Koln), violoncello (Michael Bach), trombone (Andrew Digby) and, created by myself, a sung version for voice (to words by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel und Max Bense), and for viola. The most important requirement for the whole piece is absolute stillness, which should as far as possible emanate from the performer. The pauses are occasionally in this respect the most important element. These may, if one can find the necessary stillness, become very long.Ein Hauch von Unzeit (A Breath of the Untimely) - time almost dissolves!(Klaus Huber, 1989/2014 - translation: David Alberman)CD:Jean-Luc Menet (Bass flute)CD Traversieres 120.270Jean-Luc Menet (fl)CD STR 37039Bibliography:Zimmermann, Heidy: Zeitgestaltung im Kompositionsprozess bei Klaus Huber - dargestellt anhand von Skizzen, in: Mnemosyne. Kendor continues its tradition of publishing accessible charts that have integrity and style with this cleverly titled original for advancing groups. Set in a warm, contemporary feel, this straight eighth ballad features the pianist on written figures and a flugelhorn soloist that improvises over lush chord changes. Voicings are clearly notated for the pianist and bass lines are provided to assist student players. This piece should be approached like a wind chorale with bucket-muted brass playing smooth legato articulations. Strategically placed dynamic contrasts add to the appeal of this innovative work. A guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included in each set. Duration 4:50.

Zarabanda by Enrique Granados comes from his set of 12 Spanish Dances, most often performed on guitar. This third dance, also called a fandango, is particularly well-suited for string orchestra with a beautifully elegant melody and upbeat dance feel, combining the style of flamenco with the classical tradition of the time period. Performers should pay particular attention to articulations, especially the contrasting of staccato with legato bowing. The performance should be fun and light throughout, with an emphasis on the dynamic, melodic, and rhythmic contrast.

Continuing with Carl Strommen's popular baseball-theme charts, this one refers to the tradition of infielders tossing the ball to each other after a successful out. It opens with an unaccompanied bass solo, followed by a trumpet and tenor soli. The same duo is later featured in the written or ad-lib solo section. Set in a bright swing groove for advancing groups, shifts between 2 and 4 feels and solid material for all make it a sure winner. Rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued, and a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included. Duration 3:05.

This is a captivating, contemporary even-eighth note ballad in the ECM tradition. Your 1st Alto player can really shine during this tuneful original for advancing groups. The composer highly recommends using the wordless optional vocal part to enhance the sensitivity and warmth of the piece. Ranges and rhythms are very accessible, but the rhythm section's interpretation must be solid and nuanced. This is truly a beautiful work that belongs in every library! A guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included in each set. Duration 3:25.

Here is a lovely new piece for special occasions—marriage, anniversary, or renewal of vows—with text a propos to each celebration. The melody has a Celtic quality and a lilting rhythm that will have wide appeal. Brief choral phrases alternate with the cantor in the refrain. Singing this could become a tradition! A solo edition for cantor and assembly is available, G-9389.
